พระธาตุพนมประดิษฐาน ณ วัดพระธาตุพนมวรมหาวิหาร อำเภอธาตุ พนม จังหวัดนครพนม ตามตำนานกล่าวว่าสร้างมานานไม่น้อยกว่า ๒,๓๐๐ ปี ผู้ที่สร้าง คือ พระ มหากัสปะพร้อมด้วยพระอรหันต์ ๕๐๐ องค์ ได้นำพระอุรังคธาตุหรือกระดูกหน้าอก ของสมเด็จพระสัมมนาพุทธเจ้ามาเพื่อบรรจุไว้ในพระธาตุผู้ที่ร่วมช่วยในการสร้างพระ ธาตุนี้คือ ท้ายพระยาเมืองต่าง ๆ พญานันทเสน เมืองศรีโคตรบูรณ์ (เมืองนครพนม เดิม) พญาจุลนีพรหมทัด พระยาอินทรปัตนคร และพญาดำแดง เมืองหนองหารน้อย พากันยกโยธามาช่วยสร้างพระธาตุพนมจนเสร็จและบรรจุอุรังคธาตุพร้อมของมีค่าไว้ ภายในเป็นจำนวนมาก
