จากการสำรวจสุขภาพประชาชนไทยครั้งที่4 ในปีพ.ศ2551-2552 พบว่าความชุกของภาวะน้ำหนักเกินหรือโรคอ้วนในประชากรไทยอายุ15ปีขึ้นไปพบว่าเพศชายร้อยละ28.3และเพศหญิงร้อยละ40.7จัดว่าอ้วนคือมีค่าดัชนีมวลกายมากกว่าหรือเท่ากับ 25 กิโลกรัมต่อตารางเมตร สำหรับภาวะอ้วนลงพุง(ความยาวเส้นรอบเอวมากกว่าหรือเท่ากับ90เซนติเมตรในชายและมากกว่าหรือเท่ากับ80เซนติเมตรในหญิง)พบว่ามีร้อยละ18.6ในเพศชายและร้อยละ45ในเพศหญิงและมีแนวโน้มเพิ่มขึ้นเมื่ออายุมากขึ้น(สำนักงานสำรวจสุขภาพประชาชนไทย, 2553)
