General Experimental Procedures. Methanol used for the
extraction of leaf material and for MPLC separation was used without
further puri fication. TLC was performed on Silicycle glass 60 F254
plates visualized using UV light (254 nm) and developed by staining
with KMnO
4
or ceric ammonium molybdate. ECD spectra were
recorded with a Jasco J-715 spectropolarimeter. Optical rotations were
recorded using a Jasco P-2000 polarimeter.

H NMR spectra were
recorded on a Varian 500 (500 MHz) spectrometer, and chemical
shifts are reported in ppm and coupling constant(s) in Hz, using TMS
as an internal standard in CDCl
3
or the solvent peak ( δ

spectrometer and reported in ppm using solvent as an internal
