เต่าทะเลปัจจุบันเหลืออยู่เพียง 2 ตระกูล พวกแรกคือตระกูล DERMOCHELYIDAE ซึ่งมีเต่ามะเฟือง (leatherbaok:Dermochelys coriacea) เหลืออยู่เพียงชนิดเดียว อีกตระกูลที่เหลือ คือ CHELONINI คือ เต่าตนุ (Green turtle:Chelonia myfa) เต่าหลังแบน (flatbaok turtle:Chelonia depressa) เต่ากระ (Hawksbill:Eretmochelya imbricata) ในตระกูลนี้ ยังแบ่งออกเป็นตระกูลย่อยเรียกว่า CARETTINI อีก 3 ชนิด คือ เต่าหัวฆ้อน (loggerhead turtle:Caretta caretta) เต่าหญ้าหรือเต่าสังกะสี (Olive ridley:Lepidochelys olivacea) และ Kemp's ridley turtle (Lepidochelys kempi) รวมทั้งสิ้นเป็น 7 ชนิด แต่นักวิทยาศาสตร์ได้แยกเต่าตะนุออกมาเป็นอีกชนิด คือ East Pacific Green turtle (Chelonia agassisi) ดังนั้น จึงสรุปได้ว่า ปัจจุบันในโลกนี้มีเต่าทะเลเหลืออยู่เพียง 8 ชนิดเท่านั้น ส่วนในประเทศไทย โดยเฉพาะในพื้นที่อนุรักษ์พบเต่าทะเลเพียง 4 ชนิด เท่านั้น คือ เต่ามะเฟือง เต่าตะนุ เต่ากระ และเต่าหญ้า
