วัดโลกโมฬี มีความหมายว่าเป็นวัดสูงส

วัดโลกโมฬี มีความหมายว่าเป็นวัดสูงสุดของโลกอยู่ห่างจากประตูหัวเวียง (ช้างเผือก) ไปทางทิศตะวันตกประมาณ 400 เมตร เป็นพระอารามเก่าแก่ ตั้งอยู่นอกคูเมืองและกำแพงโบราณด้านทิศเหนือบนนถนนมณีนพรัตน์ อำเภอเมือง เชียงใหม่ จุดเด่นของวัดนี้คือองค์พระเจดีย์ สันนิษฐานว่าวัดนี้สร้างในสมัยพญากือนา กษัตริย์องค์ที่ 6 แห่งราชวงศ์มังราย ช่วงปี พ.ศ. 1910-1931 (ค.ศ. 1367-1388) ส่วนองค์พระเจดีย์น่าจะสร้างภายหลัง ซึ่งตั้งตระหง่านเด่นสง่างามครอบคลุมบริเวณพื้นที่แห่งนี้

ประวัติการสร้างวัดโลกโมฬี
ในอดีตไม่ได้บันทึกเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับวัดโลกโมฬีโดยละเอียดเป็นการเฉพาะไว้ จึงไม่มีหลักฐานแสดงชัดเจนว่าใครเป็นผู้สร้างและสร้างในสมัยใด แต่ก็สันนิษฐานว่าวัดโลกโมฬี สร้างในสมัยราชวงศ์มังราย โดยมีเหตุผลดังนี้
ในปี พ.ศ. 1910 พญากือนา กษัตริย์องค์ที่ 6 แห่งราชวงศ์มังรายทรงประสงค์จะฟื้นฟูปรับปรุงพระพุทธศาสนาในล้านนาให้เจริญและมั่นคง พระองค์จึงได้ส่งผู้แทนไปยังเมืองพัน ประเทศมอญ (ปัจจุบันเป็นดินแดนส่วนหนึ่งของพม่า) เพื่อขอนิมนต์พระมหาอุทุมพร บุปผมหาสวามี ผู้เชี่ยวชาญแตกฉานในพระไตรปิฎกเพื่อให้มาช่วยแก้ปัญหาเกี่ยวกับพระพุทธศาสนาในล้านนา เนื่องจากพระมหาอุทุมพร บุปผมหาสวามี ได้ชราภาพมากแล้ว ท่านจึงได้ส่งพระอนันตเถระ พร้อมกับพระลูกศิษย์อีก 10 รูปมายังล้านนา (เชียงใหม่) พญากือนาจึงได้จัดวัดโลกโมฬีไว้รับรองแขกเมืองจากต่างประเทศ เนื่องจากวัดโลกโมฬีตั้งอยู่ใกล้วัง จึงสะดวกสบายและง่ายต่อการดูแลและปรนนิบัติมวลพระเถระเหล่านั้น

อีกประการหนึ่งคือในช่วงสมัยของพญาติโลกราช กษัตริย์ราชวงศ์มังรายองค์ที่ 9 พระองค์ได้จัดประชุมสังคายนาพระไตรปิฎกของโลกครั้งที่ 8 ที่วัดโพธารามมหาวิหาร (วัดเจ็ดยอด) ในปีพ.ศ. 2020 โดยได้นิมนต์พระเถระที่แตกฉานในพระไตรปิฎกจากวัดต่างๆ ทั้งในและต่างประเทศมาเข้าร่วมประชุม ซึ่งต้องใช้เวลาประชุมและแก้ไขประมาณ 1 ปีเศษจึงแล้วเสร็จ บรรดาพระเถระที่มาร่วมประชุม พญาติโลกราชได้จัดให้พักอยู่ที่วัดโลกโมฬี

ผู้ฟื้นฟูวัดโลกโมฬีคนแรก
ในอดีตมีกษัตริย์แห่งราชวงศ์มังรายหลายพระองค์ที่เข้ามาทำนุบำรุงวัดโลกโมฬีอยู่ตลอด พญาเมืองเกศเกล้า หรือพญาเกศเชษฐราช กษัตริย์องค์ที่ 12 และ 14 แห่งราชวงศ์มังราย (ครองราช 2 ครั้ง) เป็นกษัตริย์พระองค์หนึ่งที่ได้เข้ามาดูแลเอาใจใส่วัดโลกโมฬีมากเป็นพิเศษ ได้ทรงเจริญรอยตามวิถีทางแห่งบูรพกษัตริย์อย่างต่อเนื่องในการพัฒนาส่งเสริมพระพุทธศาสนาให้มั้นคง พญาเกศเชษฐราช ขึ้นครองราชย์ในปีพ.ศ. 2068 จากนั้นไม่นานพระองค์ก็ขึ้นไปบูรณะองค์พระธาตุดอยสุเทพโดยขยายให้ใหญ่ขึ้นคือจากเดิม เป็นสูง 11 วา กว้าง 6 วา ดังปรากฏให้เห็นอยู่ทุกวันนี้ ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2069 พระองค์ได้สร้างพระพุทธรูปทองสัมฤทธิ์ขนาดใหญ่ 1 องค์ พระนามว่า พระเจ้าล้านทอง ปัจจุบันประดิษฐานอยู่ที่วัดพระเจ้าล้านทอง อำเภอพร้าว ในปีพ.ศ. 2070 พระองค์ได้ยกมอบบ้านหัวเวียงให้เป็นบริเวณหนึ่งของวัดโลกโมฬี และต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2071 พระองค์ได้สร้างมหาเจดีย์และวิหารขึ้นในวัดโลกโมฬี
