พระธาตุพนม เป็นพระธาตุประจำผู้ที่เกิดวันอาทิตย์ ประดิษฐาน ณ วัดพระธาตุพนมวรมหาวิหาร ผลจากการขุดค้นทางโบราณคดีลงความเห็นว่าพระธาตุพนมสร้างขึ้นระหว่าง พ.ศ. 1200–1400 ตามตำนานกล่าวว่าผู้สร้างคือ พระมหากัสสปะ พระอรหันต์ 500 องค์ และท้าวพระยาเมืองต่าง ๆ ภายในองค์พระธาตุบรรจุพระอุรังคธาตุของพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าไว้ ลักษณะของสถาปัตยกรรมมีแหล่งที่มาที่เดียวกันกับปราสาทของขอม และได้ทำการบูรณะเรื่อยมา ในปี พ.ศ. 2485 ได้รับการยกฐานะเป็นพระอารามหลวงชั้นเอกขึ้นเป็น “วรมหาวิหาร”
พระธาตุพนมไม่เพียงแต่เป็นศูนย์รวมจิตใจของชาวนครพนมเท่านั้น พระธาตุพนมยังเป็นที่เคารพของชาวไทยภาคอื่น ๆ และชาวลาวอีกด้วย ว่ากันว่าถ้าใครได้มานมัสการพระธาตุครบ 7 ครั้ง จะถือว่าเป็น “ลูกพระธาตุ” เป็นสิริมงคลแก่ชีวิตและจะมีความเจริญรุ่งเรือง หรือแม้แต่การได้มากราบพระธาตุพนม 1 ครั้ง ก็ถือเป็นมงคลแก่ชีวิตแล้ว

ในวันที่ 11 สิงหาคม 2518 เวลา 19.38 น. พระธาตุพนมได้ล้มทลายลงทั้งองค์ เนื่องจากความเก่าแก่ขององค์พระธาตุพนมและประจวบกับระหว่างนั้นฝนตกพายุพัดแรงติดต่อกันมาหลายวัน ประชาชนทั้งประเทศได้ร่วมบริจาคทุนทรัพย์และรัฐบาลได้ก่อสร้างองค์พระธาตุขึ้นใหม่ตามแบบเดิม การก่อสร้างนี้เสร็จสิ้นเมื่อวันที่ 23 มีนาคม 2522 นอกจากพระบรมสารีริกธาตุที่บรรจุในองค์พระธาตุแล้ว ยังมีของมีค่ามากมายนับหมื่นชิ้น โดยเฉพาะฉัตรทองคำบนยอดพระธาตุเป็นฉัตรทองคำที่มีน้ำหนักถึง 110 กิโลกรัม ปัจจุบันองค์ พระธาตุมีฐานกว้างด้านละ 12.33 เมตร สูง 53.60 เมตร เป็นเจดีย์ทรงสี่เหลี่ยมสูงแลดูสง่างาม งานนมัสการองค์พระธาตุเริ่มตั้งแต่วันขึ้น 10 ค่ำ เดือน 3 ถึงวันแรม 1 ค่ำ เดือน 3 ของทุกปี
การเดินทาง ห่างจากตัวจังหวัดประมาณ 53 กิโลเมตร ตามทางหลวงหมายเลข 212 หรือจากสถานีขนส่งในอำเภอเมือง มีรถปรับอากาศและรถธรรมดาไปยังพระธาตุฯ
