วัดพระธาตุดอยจอมทอง อยู่ในเขตอำเภอเมืองเชียงราย มีสิ่งสำคัญและสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ที่เคารพบูชา ได้แก่ องค์พระธาตุดอยจอมทอง ซึ่งเป็นหนึ่งในพระธาตุ 9 จอม สะดือเมืองเชียงราย ( เสาหลักเมือง) และ ศาลเจ้าพ่อดอยทอง ตัววัดตั้งอยู่บนดอยจอมทองซึ่งสามารถมองเห็นทัศนียภาพโดยรอบของเมืองเชียงรายได้ ตามประวัติวัดแห่งนี้สร้างขึ้นในสมัยพระยาเรือนแก้ว ผู้ครองเมืองไชยนารายณ์ ( อำเภอเวียงชัย ปัจจุบัน) ราวปี พ.ศ. 1332 ต่อมาในสมัยของพญามังรายมหาราช ขณะนั้นเป็นเจ้าเมืองหิรัญนครเงินยาง (เชียงแสน ในปัจจุบัน) เมื่อช้างพระที่นั่งหายจึงทรงติดตามมาพบที่วังคำ พระองค์ได้เสด็จขึ้นมาบนดอยจอมทองทรงเห็นว่าเป็นชัยภูมิที่เหมาะสม จึงโปรดให้ก่อสร้างปราการโอบดอยไว้โดยรอบขนานนามว่าเมืองเชียงราย และทรงกำหนดให้พื้นที่ในบริเวณเดียวกันเป็นสะดือเมืองเชียงราย ต่อมาจึงมีการสร้างพระธาตุขึ้น ในคราวที่พระมหาเถระจากเมืองลังกา มาเผยแผ่พระพุทธศาสนา ได้นำพระบรมสารีริกธาตุมาจำนวน 16 องค์ ถวายแก่พระเจ้าพังคราชเจ้าเมืองโยนกนาคพันธุ์ พระธาตุบางส่วนได้ถูกอัญเชิญไปบรรจุและสร้างพระธาตุจอมกิตติ ที่เชียงแสน อีก 3 องค์ พระองค์ได้มอบให้แก่พญาเรือนแก้ว เจ้าเมืองไชยนารายณ์ จึงนำบรรจุเป็นพระธาตุดอยจอมทอง ซึ่งมีลักษณะสถาปัตยกรรมล้านนาและพุกาม ตั้งอยู่ภายในวัด และมีประเพณีการสรงน้ำพระธาตุในวันขึ้น 15 ค่ำ เดือน 3 ใต้ (เดือน 5 เหนือ)

ต่อมาหลังสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 ได้มีการสร้างพระวิหารขึ้นและได้มีการบูรณะต่อมาอีกหลายครั้ง มีลักษณะเป็นพระวิหารแบบร่วมสมัย ระหว่างศิลปล้านนาและรัตนโกสินทร์ ภายในประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปสัมริดปางมารวิชัย มีภาพจิตรกรรมฝาผนังที่สวยงาม ต่อมาภายหลังในปี พ.ศ. 2531 จึงมีการสร้างเสาสะดือเมืองไว้บนยอดดอยแห่งนี้ เพื่อเป็นเครื่องรำลึกถึงพระคุณของพญามังรายและเป็นการเฉลิมพระเกียรติพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดชฯ มหาราช เนื่องในวโรกาสพระราชพิธีมหามงคลเฉลิมพระชนม์พรรษา เมื่อวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม 2530
