กระแสอาเซียนเริ่มบูม เด็กไทยแห่เรียนภาษาต่างประเทศหลายแสนคน
นายบัณฑิตย์ ศรีพุทธางกูร เลขาธิการคณะกรรมการส่งเสริมการศึกษาเอกชน(กช.) กล่าวเมื่อวันที่ 29 กันยายน ถึงกรณีนายจาตุรนต์ ฉายแสง รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงศึกษาธิการ (ศธ.) มีแนวคิดให้ปฏิรูประบบการเรียนการสอนภาษาอังกฤษทั้งระบบให้เข้มข้นและไม่เน้นไวยากรณ์มากเกินไป รวมถึงเพิ่มระบบวิชาเลือกที่เน้นให้นักเรียนได้เรียนตามความสมัครใจนั้น ปัจจุบันจการสำรวจรวจพบว่ามีโรงเรียนกวดวิชา จดทะเบียนกับสำนักงานคณะกรรมการส่งเสริมการศึกษาเอกชน (สช.) กว่า 1,200 แห่งทั่วประเทศ และในจำนวนดังกล่าว เป็นโรงเรียนกวดวิชาในกรุงเทพฯ 300 แห่ง โดยมีเด็กกวดวิชาทั่วประเทศ 600,000 คนและในจำนวนดังกล่าวเป็นการกวดวิชาภาษาต่างประเทศ 300,000 คน ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่เป็นภาษาอังกฤษ

"ในส่วนของโรงเรียนเอกชน ยอมรับว่าเด็กมีปัญหาด้านภาษาอังกฤษอยู่บ้าง แต่ปัญหาอาจจะน้อยกว่าโรงเรียนในสังกัดสพฐ. แต่กระแสการเข้าสู่ประชาคมอาเซียนในปี 2558 ทำให้เด็กไทยตื่นตัวไปกวดวิชาภาษาอังกฤษเพื่อเตรียมพร้อมเข้าสู่อาเซียนมากขึ้น เพราะเมื่อเทียบกับปีก่อนๆ ที่กระแสอาเซียนยังไม่บูม จำนวนเด็กกวดวิชาภาษาต่างประเทศเพียงแค่ 200,000 กว่าคนเท่านั้น และที่ผ่านมาโรงเรียนเอกชนในสังกัดสช.ขาดแคลนครูสอนภาษาอังกฤษประมาณ 10,000 คน สช. แก้ไขปัญหาโดยการตั้งศูนย์ประสานกับต่างประเทศเพื่อขอให้ต่างประเทศช่วยส่งอาสาสมัครมาช่วยสอนภาษาอังกฤษในโรงเรียนที่ขาดแคลนครู" นายบัณฑิตย์ กล่าว
