ปลานิลแดง เป็นการพัฒนาสายพันธุ์จากปลานิลธรรมดา ๆ โดยนำไปผสมข้ามสายพันธุ์กับปลาหมอเทศ ของศูนย์พัฒนาประมงน้ำจืดของจังหวัดอุบลราชธานีและจังหวัดขอนแก่น โดย ดร.ปกรณ์ อุ่นประเสริฐ ได้ปลาที่มีลักษณะเป็นปลาที่มีสีขาวอมแดง จึงขึ้นทูลเกล้าฯถวาย สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ และได้รับการพระราชทานนามว่า "ปลานิลแดง" มาตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2522
