ในวัน ที่ 5 ธันวาคมมหาราช นอกจากจะเป็นวันเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษาของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลย เดช และเป็นวันพ่อแห่งชาติแล้ว ยังถือว่าว่าวันนี้ เป็น “วันชาติของไทย” อีกด้วย

“วันชาติ” ของประเทศต่างๆ ส่วนใหญ่จะมีเพียงวันเดียว แต่ก็มีบางประเทศเช่นกันที่มี “วันชาติ” มากกว่าหนึ่งวัน ทั้งนี้เพราะประเทศนั้นๆ อาจจะนับวันที่ได้รับเอกราชหรือวันที่ปลดแอกจากการเป็นอาณานิคม และวันที่มีการสถาปนาการปกครองขึ้นใหม่ ซึ่งอาจจะมิใช่วันเดียวกัน แต่เป็นวันสำคัญเสมือนวันชาติเท่าๆกัน เช่น ประเทศปากีสถาน จะมีวันชาติตรงกับวันที่ 23 มีนาคม ที่เขาเรียกว่า “Republic Day” และวันที่ 14 สิงหาคม เป็น “Independence Day” ส่วนฮังการี ก็มีถึง 3 วันคือ วันที่ 15 มีนาคม 20 สิงหาคม และ 23 ตุลาคม สำหรับจีน นอกจากจะมีวันชาติตรงกับวันที่ 1 ตุลาคม แล้ว ที่ฮ่องกง อันเป็นเขตปกครองพิเศษของจีน ที่มีขึ้นหลังจากอังกฤษคืนเกาะฮ่องกงให้จีนก็มีการเฉลิมฉลองวันที่ตรงกับวัน สถาปนาการปกครองพิเศษนี้ขึ้น ในวันที่ 1 กรกฎาคม อีกด้วย

สำหรับ ประเทศไทย เราเคยได้มีการกำหนดให้วันที่ 24 มิถุนายน เป็น “วันชาติ”ของไทย ด้วยถือว่าวันที่ 24 มิถุนายน 2475 เป็นวันเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครองจากระบอบสมบูรณาญาสิทธิราชย์ มาเป็นการปกครองในระบอบรัฐธรรมนูญที่เป็นประชาธิปไตย โดยได้มี ประกาศสำนักนายกรัฐมนตรี เรื่อง “วันชาติ” ลงวันที่ 18 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2481 โดย พ.อ.พหลพลพยุหเสนา เป็นนายกรัฐมนตรีสมัยนั้น และได้มีการเฉลิมฉลองวันชาติ 24 มิถุนายน ครั้งแรกในปีพ.ศ. 2482 ในสมัยจอมพลป. พิบูลสงครามเป็นนายกรัฐมนตรี

ด้วยคณะรัฐมนตรีได้พิจารณาเห็นว่า ตามที่ได้กำหนดให้มีการเฉลิมฉลองวันชาติไทยในวันที่ 24 มิถุนายน นั้น ได้ปรากฏในภายหลังว่า มีข้อที่ไม่เหมาะสมหลายประการ ในด้านประชาชนและหนังสือพิมพ์ก็ได้เสนอแนะให้พิจารณาในเรื่องนี้หลายครั้ง หลายคราว คณะรัฐมนตรีจึงได้แต่งตั้งคณะกรรมการขึ้นพิจารณา โดยมีพลตรีพระเจ้าวรวงศ์เธอ กรมหมื่นนราธิปพงศ์ประพันธ์ รองนายกรัฐมนตรีเป็นประธาน

คณะกรรมการนี้ได้พิจารณาแล้ว เสนอความเห็นว่า ประเทศต่างๆได้เลือกถือวันใดวันหนึ่งที่มีความสำคัญเกี่ยวเนื่องกับชนในชาติ ต่างๆกัน โดยถือเอาวันประกาศเอกราช วันอิสรภาพ วันตั้งถิ่นฐาน วันสาธารณรัฐ วันสถาปนาพระราชวงศ์บ้าง ซึ่งไม่เหมือนกัน แต่ประเทศที่มีพระมหากษัตริย์เป็นประมุขของชาติ โดยทั่วไปนั้น ได้ถือเอาวันพระราชสมภพของพระมหากษัตริย์เป็นวันเฉลิมฉลองของชาติ เช่น ประเทศอังกฤษ เนเธอร์แลนด์ เดนมาร์ก สวีเดน ญี่ปุ่น ฯลฯ เป็นต้น แม้ประเทศไทยเราเองก็ได้ถือเอาวันพระราชสมภพเป็นวันเฉลิมฉลองของชาติไทยมา แล้ว เพิ่งจะมากำหนดเอาวันที่ 24 มิถุนายน เป็นวันชาติ เพิ่มขึ้นอีกวันหนึ่งในระยะหลังนี้เอง

คณะกรรมการจึงมีความเห็นว่า เพื่อให้เป็นไปตามขนบประเพณีของประเทศที่มีพระมหากษัตริย์เป็นประมุข และเป็นหลักการสมัครสมานสามัคคีรวมจิตใจของบุคคลในชาติโดยทั่วกัน จึงสมควรจะถือเอาวันพระราชสมภพของพระมหากษัตริย์เป็นวันเฉลิมฉลองของชาติไทย ต่อไป โดยยกเลิกวันชาติ ในวันที่ 24 มิถุนายนเสีย


ดังนั้น นับแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2503 ประเทศไทยจึงได้ถือเอาวันพระราชสมภพของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ซึ่งตรงกับวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม ของทุกปี เป็น “วันชาติ” ของไทย ตั้งแต่นั้นเป็นต้นมา
