1. สิ่งแวดล้อมทางธรรมชาติ เป็นสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นเองตามธรรมชาติ เช่น ดิน น้ำ อากาศ ป่าไม้ สัตว์ป่า ฯลฯ สิ่งแวดล้อมประเภทนี้เกิดขึ้นเองตามธรรมชาติอาจใช้เวลาเร็วหรือช้าเพียงใดขึ้นอยู่กับชนิดและประเภท
สิ่งแวดล้อมทางธรรมชาติสามารถแบ่งออกเป็น 2 ประเภท ได้แก่

2) สิ่งไม่มีชีวิต เป็นสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นตามธรรมชาติที่ไม่มีชีวิต อาจจะมองเห็นหรือไม่ก็ได้ เช่น ดิน น้ำ ก๊าซ อากาศ ควัน แร่ธาตุ เมฆ รังสีความร้อน เสียง ฯลฯ เราอาจเรียกว่า สิ่งแวดล้อมทางกายภาพ ได้เช่นกัน
2. สิ่งแวดล้อมที่มนุษย์สร้างขึ้น เป็นสิ่งที่มนุษย์ใช้ความรู้ความสามารถที่ได้รับการสั่งสอน สืบทอด และพัฒนากันมาตลอด ซึ่ง ได้แบ่งไว้ 2 ประเภทคือ
1) สิ่งแวดล้อมทางวัตถุ หรือสิ่งแวดล้อมที่สามารถมองเห็นได้ เช่น บ้านเรือน เครื่องบิน โทรทัศน์ ฯลฯ สิ่งเหล่านี้สร้างขึ้นเพื่ออำนวยความสะดวก หรือตอบสนองความต้องการในการดำรงชีวิต บางอย่างอาจมีความจำเป็น แต่บางอย่างเป็นเพียงสิ่งฟุ่มเฟือย
2) สิ่งแวดล้อมทางสังคม หรือสิ่งแวดล้อมที่เป็นนามธรรม เป็นสิ่งที่มนุษย์สร้างขึ้นเพื่อความเป็นระเบียบสำหรับอยู่ร่วมกันอย่างมีความสุข สิ่งแวดล้อมทางสังคมได้แก่ระบอบการปกครอง ศาสนา การศึกษา อาชีพ ความเชื่อ เจตคติ กฎหมาย ขนบธรรมเนียมประเพณี ระเบียบข้อบังคับ ฯลฯ สิ่งแวดล้อมที่มองไม่เห็นจะแสดงออกมาในรูปพฤติกรรม สิ่งแวดล้อมกับมนุษย์
