กรมควบคุมการปฏิบัติทางอากาศ จัดตั้ง

กรมควบคุมการปฏิบัติทางอากาศ จัดตั้งขึ้นเมื่อ ๑ ตุลาคม ๒๕๒๐ ตามพระราชกฤษฎีกา การแบ่งส่วนราชการ และกำหนดหน้าที่ส่วนราชการ

(บย.) ซึ่งเดิมเป็นส่วนกำลังรบประกอบด้วย กองบิน, หน่วยบินยุทธวิธี, หน่วยในระบบควบคุมทางยุทธวิธี และหน่วยในระบบป้องกันทางอากาศ

เมื่อ พุทธศักราช ๒๕๓๘ ได้มีการจัดส่วนราชการกองทัพอากาศขึ้นใหม่ ตามพระราชกฤษฎีกาการแบ่งส่วนราชการ และกำหนดหน้าที่ส่วนราชการกองทัพอากาศ กองบัญชาการทหารสูงสุด กระทรวงกลาโหม พุทธศักราช ๒๕๓๘ ให้มีกองบัญชาการยุทธทางอากาศ เป็นหน่วยขึ้นตรงกองทัพอากาศ ซึ่งมีหน้าที่ เตรียมกำลัง ทางอากาศ กำลังภาคพื้น และระบบควบคุมการปฏิบัติทางอากาศ ของกองบัญชาการยุทธทางอากาศ ให้พร้อมปฏิบัติการตามที่กองทัพอากาศกำหนด
ดังนั้น กองทัพอากาศจึงได้จัดให้กรมควบคุมการปฏิบัติทางอากาศ เป็นหน่วยขึ้นตรงต่อ กองบัญชาการยุทธทางอากาศ
