“เตย” เป็นเกมพื้นเมืองที่นิยมเล่นกันมากในภาคกลาง สมัยก่อน พบว่ามีการเล่นกันแล้วในช่วงปี พ.ศ. 2470 ในจังหวัดชัยนาท พระนครศรีอยุธยา อ่างทอง ฉะเชิงเทรา กรุงเทพ สมุทรสงคราม เป็นต้น สันนิษฐานว่า การเล่นเตยน่าจะพัฒนามากจากการวิ่งเล่นบนคันนาในชนบท เพราะลักษณะสนามเล่นจะเป็นตารางคล้ายกับพื้นที่นาในชนบท โดยเส้นต่างๆ จะเปรียบเสมือนคันนาที่ใช้เดิน วิ่งเล่นกันได้ ส่วนชื่อที่เรียกว่า “เตย” นั้น สันนิษฐานว่าน่าจะมาจากลักษณะสนามเล่นที่เป็นตารางยาว มีเส้นกลางเป็นแกนมีเส้นตัดเป็นลำดับขั้น แตกกิ่งก้านออกไปคล้ายลำต้นและใบของพรรณไม้ชนิดหนึ่งที่ชื่อว่า “เตย” ซึ่งชาวบ้านนิยมนำมาใช้ปรุงกลิ่นหอมในการทำขนมและอาหารไทยบางชนิด บางท้องถิ่นมีชื่อเรียกแตกต่างกันไป เช่น เรียกว่า “ตาล่อง” หรือ “บัลลูน” ก็มี เล่นกันทั้งในหมู่ผู้ใหญ่ คนหนุ่มสาวและเด็กๆ นิยมเล่นในงานเทศกาลตรุษสงกรานต์ หรืองานรื่นเริงทั่วไป

วิธีเล่น

1. กำหนดผู้เล่นเป็น 2 ทีมๆ ละ 5 คน ให้ทีมหนึ่งเป็นฝ่ายรับ อีกทีมเป็นฝ่ายรุก ฝ่ายรับจะลงยืนรับประจำเส้นจากเส้นหน้าไปเส้นหลังคนละ 1 เส้น ให้หัวหน้าฝ่ายรับยืนอยู่เส้นหน้า ส่วนฝ่ายรุกให้ยืนอยู่นอกสนามด้านเส้นหน้า หันหน้าเข้าสนามกระจายเตรียมตัวพร้อมเล่น
