วัดปรมัยยิกาวาสวรวิหาร เป็นวัดอาราม

วัดปรมัยยิกาวาสวรวิหาร เป็นวัดอารามหลวงชั้นโท เดิมชื่อ วัดปากอ่าว เป็นวัดโบราณสร้างมาตั้งแต่สมัยอยุธยา ถูกทิ้งเป็นวัดร้างหลังจากเสียกรุงศรีอยุธยาครั้งที่ 2 จนถึง พ.ศ. 2317 พระเจ้าตากสินมหาราชโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ชาวมอญมาตั้งบ้านเรือนที่เกาะเกร็ด พระสุเมธาจารย์ ( เถ้า ) พระเถระผู้ใหญ่ฝ่ายรามัญได้รวบรวมผู้มีจิตศรัทธาสร้างขึ้น ได้สร้างพระเจดีย์ทรงรามัญ ชื่อเจดีย์ร่างกุ้ง รวมทั้งพระพุทธไสยาสน์ และท่านได้เป็นเจ้าอาวาสองค์แรกของวัดนี้



พ.ศ. 2417 วันเสาร์ขึ้น 6 ค่ำ เดือน 12 พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวเสด็จพระราชดำเนินทอดพระกฐิน ณ วัดปากอ่าวและวัดใกล้เคียง ได้เสด็จทอดพระเนตรบริเวณวัดซึ่งเสนาสนะต่างปรักหักพังทรุดโทรม ทรงคำนึงถึงพระเจ้าบรมมหัยยิกาเธอ กรมสมเด็จพระสุดารัตน์ราชประยูร ซึ่งอภิบาลบำรุงพระองค์มาแต่ยังทรงพระเยาว์ ทรงมีรับสั่งอยู่เนืองๆ ว่าถ้าทรงพระเจริญขึ้นแล้วขอให้ทรงช่วยให้ได้สร้างพระอารามหนึ่ง จึงทรงกำหนดจะปฏิสังขรณ์วัดปากอ่าว และทรงมีพระราชดำรัสต่อพระคุณวงศ์ ( สน ) เจ้าอาวาสให้ทราบพระราชประสงค์ และทรงนำพระราชดำริกราบทูลแด่พระเจ้าบรมมหัยยิกาเธอ กรมสมเด็จพระสุดารัตน์ราชประยูร ซึ่งทรงพระปิติปราโมทย์เมื่อได้ทรงทราบเช่นนั้น



การปฏิสังขรณ์วัดปากอ่าว มีพระยาอัศนีศาภัยจางวาง กรมพระแสงปืนต้นเป็นแม่กองปฏิสังขรณ์ เริ่มทำกุฏิสงฆ์และหอไตรแบบมอญ เมื่อวันอาทิตย์ขึ้น 2 ค่ำ เดือนยี่ ปีจอ พ.ศ. 2417 พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวเสด็จพระราชดำเนินมาก่อฤกษ์พระอุโบสถใหม่ โดยมีพระเจ้าน้องยาเธอพระองค์เจ้ากฤษฎาภินิหาร ( ต้นราชสกุลกฤดากร ) เป็นนายกอง พระราชสงคราม ( ทัด ) เป็นช่างทำพระอารามที่สร้างใหม่ทั้งหมด คงรูปแบบมอญไว้ เนื่องจากเป็นวัดมอญ ทรงโปรดให้สร้างพระไตรปิฎก เป็นภาษามอญ ให้พระยาศรีสุนทรโวหารเจ้ากรมพระยาลักษณ์จารึกเรื่องทรงพระอารามนี้ลงในเสาศิลาเป็นอักษรไทยเสาหนึ่ง และพระสุเมธาจารย์แปลเป็นภาษามอญ และทรงโปรดให้จารึกเป็นภาษามอญอีกเสาหนึ่ง จารึกทั้งอักษรไทยและอักษรมอญอยู่ที่หน้าพระอุโบสถ และโปรดเกล้าฯ พระราชทานนามพระอารามนี้ใหม่ว่า วัดปรมัยยิกาวาส
