หนังสือที่ดีควรให้ประโยชน์แก่ผู้อ่าน คุ้มค่า อ่านเป็นประโยชน์เพียงด้านหนึ่ง หรือหลาย ๆ ด้านดังนี้
๔.๑) ความรู้ คือ ให้รู้ในเรื่องที่ผู้อ่านไม่เคยรู้ หรือได้รู้มากขึ้นจากที่เคยรู้ ความรู้ที่ได้จากการอ่านนั้น อาจเป็นความรู้ทั่วไป หรือความรู้เฉพาะด้านก็ได้
๔.๒) ความเข้าใจ คือ เข้าใจในสิ่งที่สงสัย ซึ่งเกิดจากการนำความรู้เดิมมาประยุกต์เข้ากับความรู้ใหม่ที่ได้รับ แล้วนำมาทบทวนโดยใช้วิจารณญาณ ให้เกิดความเข้าใจชัด และลุ่มลึก สามารถนำไปเป็นแนวทางในการดำรงวิถีชีวิตได้
๔.๓) ความเพลิดเพลิน คือได้รับความพึงพอใจ ความเพลิดเพลิน และความสุขใจจากการอ่าน
