สมัย 30 กว่าปีก่อนที่ผู้เขียนอยู่ในวัยศึกษา จำได้ดีว่าสมัยนั้นไม่ค่อยมีโรงเรียนกวดวิชามากนัก จะมีก็แต่การกวดวิชาเพื่อเตรียมสอบเข้าโรงเรียนเตรียมอุดมศึกษา และเตรียมสอบเอนทรานซ์เข้ามหาวิทยาลัยเท่านั้น พอวันปิดภาคเรียนพวกนักเรียนทั้งหลายก็ใช้เวลาอยู่บ้านกับผู้ปกครอง ใช้เวลาช่วยงานบ้านบ้าง แล้วก็ไปพักผ่อนตามต่างจังหวัดกับครอบครัว ตัวผู้เขียนเองและเพื่อนๆ หลายคนที่เรียนหนังสือมาด้วยกันไม่เคยต้องเรียนพิเศษเลย จะมีบ้างก็ไม่เกิน 10 คนที่สอบตก หรือไม่ก็เรียนอ่อนมากประมาณว่าเกือบๆ จะสอบตก ที่จำเป็นต้องเรียนพิเศษในช่วงปิดภาคเรียนเพื่อกวดวิชาให้เรียนทันเพื่อนฝูง

แต่ในปัจจุบันนี้ผู้เขียนเห็นว่ากว่า 80 เปอร์เซ็นต์ของเด็กๆ ที่เรียนหนังสือตามโรงเรียนต่างๆ ต้องใช้เวลาหลังเลิกเรียนในชั้นเรียนปกติ และเวลาในวันหยุดสุดสัปดาห์เรียนวิชาต่างๆ ที่โรงเรียนเองเป็นผู้จัดเตรียมไว้ หรือที่ผู้ปกครองพาเด็กไปเรียนเพิ่มเติมเองอีกมากมาย เช่น เรียนภาษาอังกฤษ ญี่ปุ่น ร้องเพลง เต้นบัลเลต์ เรียนการใช้โปรแกรมคอมพิวเตอร์ต่างๆ เรียนฝึกพูด ฯลฯ เด็กบางคนต้องเรียนทุกวันเลยค่ะ! และพอสอบถามดูปรากฏว่า เด็กหลายคนเป็นเด็กที่ไม่ได้เรียนย่ำแย่ หรือได้เกรดต่ำแต่ประการใด ทั้งนี้ผู้เขียนได้รวบรวมเหตุผลต่างๆ ที่ทำให้เด็กไปโรงเรียนกวดวิชา และโรงเรียนพิเศษ
