งานประเพณีแห่เทียนพรรษา เป็นประเพณีทางพุทธศาสนา ของชาวไทย(ล้านนา) ซึ่งมีความเจริญในพุทธศาสนา วัฒนธรรม และประเพณีมาเป็นเวลายาวนาน ถือเป็นงานบุญที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดของจังหวัดเชียงราย โดยได้กำหนดจัดงานขึ้นในวันขึ้น 15 ค่ำเดือน 8 และแรม 1 ค่ำเดือน 8 หรือวันอาสาฬหบูชาและวันเข้าพรรษา จัดให้มีขึ้นทุกปี
ชาวเชียงราย ได้ทำต้นเทียนประกวดประชันความวิจิตรบรรจงกัน ตั้งแต่อดีตจนถึงปัจจุบัน จังหวัดเชียงราย ได้จัดงานสัปดาห์ประเพณีแห่เทียนพรรษา ให้เป็นงานประเพณีที่ยิ่งใหญ่และมโหฬาร ปัจจุบันสถานที่จัดงาน คือ บริเวณสวนตุง มีการประกวดต้นเทียน 2 ประเภท คือ ประเภทเทียนเล็ก และประเภทเทียนใหญ่ โดยขบวนแห่จากวัดต่างๆ พร้อมนางฟ้าประจำต้นเทียน จะเคลื่อนขบวนจาก สวนตุง ไปตามถนนถึงแยกศาลจังหวัดเชียงรายเลี้ยวซ้าย เข้าถนนพหลโยธินถึงแยกประตูสลีเลี้ยวขวาเข้าถนนบรรพปราการผ่านหอนาฬิกาถึงสี่แยกสะพานดำตรงไปผ่านโรงเรียนสามัคคี ถึงแยกประตูเชียงใหม่เลี้ยวขวาเข้าถนนไตรรัตน์ เลี้ยวขวาเข้าถนนธนาลัย ผ่านสี่แยกธนาคารออมสิน ตรงไปสิ้นสุดขบวนที่สวนตุง
