โครงการพัฒนาพื้นที่บริเวณวัดมงคลชัยพัฒนา อันเนื่องมาจากพระราชดำริ เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2531 พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงมีพระราชกระแสให้ นายสุเมธ ตันติเวชกุล นายมนูญ มุกข์ประดิษฐ์ และนายพิมลศักดิ์ สุวรรณทัต กรรมการมูลนิธิชัยพัฒนา พิจารณาจัดซื้อที่ดินที่ติดกับวัดมงคล ตำบลห้วยบง อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดสระบุรี โดยต่อมาพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ พระราชทานนามจากวัดมงคลเป็นวัดมงคลชัยพัฒนา เมื่อวันที่ 3 ตุลาคม 2535 เป็นต้นมา จากพระราชกระแสข้างต้นมูลนิธิชัยพัฒนาจึงได้จัดซื้อและมีผู้บริจาคที่ดินบริเวณดังกล่าวรวม 32 - 0 - 47 ไร่ เพื่อนำมาพัฒนาการเกษตรตามแนว ทฤษฎีใหม่ ในพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว โดยให้ใช้สถานที่ดังกล่าวดำเนิน โครงการพัฒนาพื้นที่บริเวณวัดมงคลชัยพัฒนาอันเนื่องมาจากพระราชดำริ เพื่อให้เป็นศูนย์สาธิตการดำเนินเกษตรทฤษฎีใหม่อย่างเป็นรูปธรรม สามารถให้เกษตรกรนำไปประยุกต์ใช้ปฏิบัติในพื้นที่ของตนได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ สามารถพึ่งพาตนเองได้อย่างพออยู่พอกิน ซึ่งโครงการดังกล่าวนับเป็นจุดกำเนิดของ เกษตรทฤษฎีใหม่ แห่งแรกในประเทศไทย
