การจัดการขยะอย่างไม่เหมาะสมทำให้เกิดปัญหาต่าง ๆ ได้แก่ การก่อให้เกิดแหล่งเพาะพันธุ์ของเชื้อโรค การเกิดกลิ่นรบกวน การเกิดน้ำเสียจากกองขยะ การเป็นบ่อเกิดอัคคีภัย ตลอดจนการเป็นผลให้สิ้นเปลืองงบประมาณในการกำจัด
การวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพนี้ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อค้นหารูปแบบการจัดการขยะมูลฝอยที่เหมาะสม โดยให้ประชาชนในชุมชนบ้าน กม. 26 ใน ตำบลตาเนาะปูเต๊ะ อำเภอบันนังสตา จังหวัดยะลา มีส่วนร่วม วิธีการวิจัยทำโดยจัดให้มีการสนทนากลุ่มย่อย จำนวน 3 ครั้ง รวมผู้เข้าร่วมสนทนา 25 คน ในช่วงเดือนมีนาคม 2557 ข้อมูลจากการบันทึก นำไปวิเคราะห์โดยการวิเคราะห์เนื้อหาและจัดหมวดหมู่ประเด็นเนื้อหา
ผลการวิจัยพบว่า การจัดการขยะมูลฝอยของชุมชนบ้าน กม. 26 ใน ตำบลตาเนาะปูเต๊ะ อำเภอบันนังสตา จังหวัดยะลา นั้น แบ่งได้ 7 รูปแบบ ได้แก่ 1) การทำธนาคารขยะ 2) การนำขยะไปใช้ประโยชน์ใหม่ 3) การทำปุ๋ยหมัก 4) การประกวดบ้านสวยปลอดขยะ 5) การทำมหกรรมทำความสะอาด 6) การออกกฎหรือข้อบังคับมีการจับ ปรับ เมื่อทิ้งขยะ และ 7) การปลูกจิตสำนึกให้จัดการขยะอย่างเหมาะสม
ข้อเสนอแนะจากงานวิจัยนี้ คือ ควรส่งเสริมและให้ความสำคัญกับการเข้ามามีส่วนร่วมของประชาชนในทุกขั้นตอน เช่น การเปิดโอกาสให้ประชาชนรับรู้ข้อมูลข่าวสาร และแสดงความคิดเห็นในการจัดการมูลฝอยในชุมชน รวมถึงการปลูกฝังให้มีจิตสำนึกต่อการรักษาความสะอาด และควรให้ความสำคัญกับการจัดการขยะภายในชุมชน
