          วันเข้าพรรษา เป็นวันที่พระสงฆ์เริ่มอยู่จำพรรษาตลอด 3 เดือน ในฤดูฝน ตั้งแต่วันแรม 1 ค่ำเดือน 8 จนถึงกลางเดือน 11 วันเข้าพรรษาที่พระพุทธเจ้าทรงอนุญาตไว้มีอยู่ 2 วันคือ 

          - วันเข้าปุริมพรรษา คือวันเข้าพรรษาแรก ตั้งแต่วันแรม 1 ค่ำ เดือน 8 ไปจนถึงวันเพ็ญกลางเดือน 11 
          - วันเข้าปัจฉิมพรรษา  คือวันเข้าพรรษาหลัง ตั้งแต่วันแรม 1 ค่ำเดือน 9 ไปจนถึงวันเพ็ญเดือน 12 
เมื่อเข้าพรรษาแล้วหากภิกษุมีกิจธุระจำเป็น อันชอบด้วยพระวินัย พระพุทธเจ้าก็ทรงอนุญาตให้ไปได้ โดยมีข้อจำกัดว่าจะต้องกลับมายังสถานที่จำพรรษาเดิมภายใน 7 วัน ที่เรียกว่า สัตตาหกรณียะ
