งานวิจัยนี้เป็นการศึกษาความเป็นไปได้ในการใช้บริการ mPOS กับร้านค้าปลีกรายย่อย ในเขตตำบลพานทอง อำเภอพานทอง จังหวัดชลบุรี เนื่องจากปัจจุบันร้านค้าปลีกรายย่อยมีจำนวนลดน้อยลงอย่างมากเนื่องด้วยการไม่ปรับตัวเพื่อให้สามารถกับแข่งขันกับร้านสะดวกซื้อที่กำลังขยายตัวอย่างสูงได้ ผู้วิจัยจึงมีแนวคิดที่จะนำเทคโนโลยีมาช่วยสร้างโอกาสทางการค้าของร้านค้าปลีกรายย่อยให้มีมากขึ้น โดยงานวิจัยนี้ได้ทำการศึกษาความเป็นไปได้ทั้งทางด้านผู้ซื้อและผู้ขายในการที่จะใช้บริการ mPOS เพื่อรับชำระเงินด้วยบัตรเครดิตและบัตรเดบิต เป็นงานวิจัยเชิงปริมาณและเชิงคุณภาพเพื่อให้ผลการวิจัยมีความถูกต้องน่าเชื่อถือมากที่สุด
ผลของการศึกษาครั้งนี้ทำให้ได้พบข้อมูลสำคัญหลายประการ ได้แก่ ด้านผู้ซื้อตัดสินใจที่จะใช้บริการ mPOS ประมาณ 50 เปอร์เซ็นต์ และให้ระดับความสำคัญในเรื่องความปลอดภัยต่อการใช้บริการ mPOS มาก สำหรับผู้ขายนั้น การประเมินความเป็นไปได้ทางด้านการเงินในส่วนของค่า NPV และ IRR มีความคุ้มค่าที่จะลงทุนในบริการ mPOS อีกทั้งใช้ระยะเวลาการคืนทุนเพียง 1 เดือนเท่านั้น แต่ในส่วนของข้อมูลที่ได้หลังจากการทำวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพหรือจากการสัมภาษณ์กลุ่มร้านค้า ให้ความเห็นที่จะไม่ใช้บริการ mPOS ตรงกันทั้งหมด โดยให้เหตุผลในเรื่องของอัตราค่าธรรมเนียมต่อรายการที่แพงเกินไป ไม่มีความรู้ความเข้าใจเรื่องบัตรเครดิตและบัตรเดบิต อุปกรณ์ mPOS มีความไม่คงทนและยากต่อการดูแลรักษา และเหตุผลทางด้านการยื่นรายได้และเสียภาษี ทางภาครัฐและเอกชนจะต้องงานวิจัยเรื่องนี้ไปศึกษาเป็นแนวทางในการกำหนดนโยบายที่เหมาะสมต่อไป
