ชาวสยามได้รู้จักและชื่นชมซีเนมาโตกราฟ ประดิษฐกรรมภาพยนตร์ของตระกูลลูมิแอร์แห่งฝรั่งเศส โดยนักฉายภาพยนตร์เร่คนหนึ่ง นาม เอส. จี. มาร์คอฟสกี เข้ามาจัดฉายเก็บค่าดูจากสาธารณชนเป็นครั้งแรก เมื่อวันที่ 10 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2440 ณ โรงละครหม่อมเจ้าอลังการ กรุงเทพ ชาวสยามเรียกมหรสพนี้ว่า หนังฝรั่ง เป็นมหรสพฉายแสงเล่นเงาบนจอผ้าขาว ทำนองเดียวกับ หนังใหญ่ หนังตะลุง มหรสพดั้งเดิมที่ชาวสยามรู้จักกันดีอยู่แล้ว ปี พ.ศ. 2447 คณะฉายภาพยนตร์แบบหนังเร่ชาวญี่ปุ่นนำหนังเข้ามาฉาย โดยเนื้อหาส่วนใหญ่เป็นเหตุการณ์การสู้รบระหว่าง ญี่ปุ่นกับรัสเซีย เมื่อเห็นว่าการฉายหนังครั้งแรกได้ผลดี จึงกลับมาฉายหนังเร่ในเมืองไทยอีกครั้ง และครั้งนี้ได้สร้างโรงภาพยนตร์ชั่วคราวขึ้น จนในที่สุดตั้งโรงฉายหนังฝรั่งเป็นโรงถาวรรายแรกของสยาม เปิดฉายหนังประจำ บริเวณหลังวัดตึก ถนนเจริญกรุง ชาวสยามจึงได้ดูหนังฝรั่งกันทุกคืน จึงค่อย ๆ เปลี่ยนมาเรียกมหรสพชนิดนี้ว่า หนังญี่ปุ่น แทนคำว่าหนังฝรั่ง
พ.ศ. 2465 ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 6 ได้มีกลุ่มนักสร้างภาพยนตร์ชาวอเมริกันจากบริษัทยูนิเวอร์ซัล ได้มาถ่ายภาพยนตร์ในประเทศไทยเรื่อง นางสาวสุวรรณ โดยได้รับความช่วยเหลือ จากกรมมหรสพหลวงและกรมรถไฟหลวง โดยใช้นักแสดงไทยทั้งหมด ซึ่งนับว่าเป็นภาพยนตร์เรื่องแรกของเมืองไทย โดยมีนายเฮนรี่ แมคเรย์ กำกับการแสดง นายเดล คลองสัน ถ่ายภาพ นำแสดงโดย ขุนรามภรตศาสตร์ นางสาวเสงี่ยม นาวีเสถียร และหลวงภรตกรรมโกศล ซึ่งถือได้ว่าทั้งสามได้เล่นเป็นพระเอก นางเอกและผู้ร้าย คนแรกของเมืองไทย ภาพยนตร์เรื่อง นางสาวสุวรรณ ออกฉายในกรุงสยามเป็นครั้งแรกเมื่อวันที่ 22 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2466 ท่ามกลางความตื่นเต้นของประชาชน

ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2468 คณะสร้างภาพยนตร์จากฮอลลีวูดอีกคณะ เดินทางเข้ามาถ่ายทำภาพยนตร์เรื่อง "ช้าง" โดยใช้ผู้แสดงเป็นชาวสยามทั้งหมดเช่นกัน ในเวลาที่ภาพยนตร์เรื่อง ช้าง ออกฉายในประเทศสยามนั้น คนไทยได้สร้างหนังบันเทิงและนำออกฉายแล้วหลายเรื่อง ผู้คนจึงไม่ค่อยตื่นเต้นกับภาพยนตร์เรื่อง ช้าง กันมากเท่าที่ควร
