วัดโพธิ์ เป็นวัดที่มีความเก่า

 
     วัดโพธิ์ เป็นวัดที่มีความเก่าแก่ทางประวัติศาสตร์ และมีความสำคัญอย่างยิ่งของเมืองขอนแก่น มีการศึกษาพระปริยัติธรรมและการปฏิบัติวิปัสสนากรรมฐานของพระสงฆ์ ตลอดถึงอุบาสกอุบาสิกา และยังไม่ทราบแน่ชัดว่าใครเป็นคนสร้างและสร้างมาตั้งแต่เมื่อใด แต่เท่าที่สืบทราบตามหลักฐานทางโบราณวัตถุตลอดถึงคำบอกเล่าของคนเฒ่าคนแก่ เช่น มีพระ อุโบสถหลังเก่า (สิม) จากการตรวจสอบของกรมศิลปากรพบว่าสิมแห่งนี้มีอายุไม่น้อยกว่า ๒๐๐ กว่าปี ถ้ารวมถึงอายุการสร้างวัดด้วยคงมีอายุไม่ต่ำกว่า ๓๐๐ ปี เพราะเป็นวัดที่มีมาก่อนที่ท้าวเพลียเมืองแพนจะมาสร้างบ้านบึงบอน เมื่อสร้างเมืองเสร็จแล้วก็มีการบูรณะปฏิสังขรณ์วัดเก่าขึ้นมา ตามประวัติการสร้างวัดคู่เมืองขอนแก่นซึ่งเริ่มต้นที่รอบ บึงบอนมีอยู่ ๔ วัด คือ 
๑.วัดเหนือ เป็นวัดที่อยู่ทางทิศเหนือ สำหรับเจ้าเมืองใช้บำเพ็ญกุศลในพิธีการต่างๆ ปัจจุบันได้แก่วัดธาตุพระอารามหลวง
๒.วัดกลาง เป็นวัดที่อยู่กึ่งกลาง สำหรับข้าราชการชั้นผู้ใหญ่ได้บำเพ็ญกุศล ปัจจุบัน คือ วัดกลางเมืองเก่า 
๓.วัดแขกหรือวัดท่าแขก เป็นทีสำหรับพระสงฆ์และแขกต่างถิ่นได้พักอาศัยรวมทั้งประกอบพิธีกรรมต่างๆ ซึ่งท้าวเพลียเมืองแพนได้ปฏิสังขรณ์ อยู่ทางทิศตะวันออก ของบึงบอนเรียกว่าวัดท่าแขก ปัจจุบันเรียกว่า วัดโพธิ์ (มีต้นโพธิ์จำนวนมาก)
๔.วัดใต้ สำหรับประชาชนทั่วไป ใช้ในการประกอบพิธีกรรมต่างๆ ปัจจุบันคือวัดหนองแวงพระอารามหลวง เนื่องจากวัดโพธิ์ เป็นวัดที่มีความเก่าแก่จึงมีเจ้าอาวาสหลายรูป ทั้งที่สืบค้นได้และไม่ปรากฏหลักฐาน ส่วนที่พอจะสืบค้นได้มี ๗ รูป ดังนี้

    ปัจจุบันวัดโพธิ์ บ้านโนนทัน ได้รับการคัดเลือกให้เป็นสำนักปฏิบัติธรรมประจำ จังหวัดขอนแก่น แห่งที่ ๑ ซึ่งทางวัดมีความพร้อมทางด้านสถานที่ บุคคลากร และอุปกรณ์ในด้านต่างๆ ในแต่ละปีจะได้รับความไว้วางใจจากหน่วยงานราชการ เอกชน และรวมถึงสถาบันการศึกษาหลายแห่ง เข้ามาฝึกอบรม และปฏิบัติธรรม รวมถึงใช้สถานที่ในงานพิธีการของแต่ละองค์กรด้วย เนื่องจากทางวัดโพธิ์ ได้จัดสถานที่ไว้สำหรับอบรมประชาชนประจำตำบลในเมืองโดยเฉพาะ ซึ่งสามารถรองรับโครงการต่าง ๆ จากทางภาคส่วนรัฐบาล และรวมถึงท้องถิ่นได้เป็นอย่างดี ด้วยเหตุนี้ ทางวัดจึงจัดสร้างศูนย์ปฏิบัติธรรม แห่งที่ ๒ ห่างจากทางวัดประมาณ ๙๐๐ เมตร และอยู่ในระหว่างการดำเนินงานก่อสร้าง ซึ่งยังไม่แล้วเสร็จ แต่สามารถเปิดใช้งานได้ในหลายพิธีการในอาณาบริเวณของทางวัด ได้แบ่งพื้นที่สำหรับทำกิจกรรมต่างๆ อย่างเหมาะสม และได้ใช้ประโยชน์สูงสุด เช่น จัดทำพิพิธภัณฑ์มรดกอีสาน ลานธรรม ลานวิปัสสนากรรมฐาน ศาลาโพธิสารและอาคารรับรอง สถานีวิทยุกระจายเสียงวัดโพธิ์ FM 91.0 MHz ศาลานวัดแผนไทย สวนสมุนไพร อาคารเรียนนักธรรม-บาลี ศูนย์นิทรรศการ หอกระจายข่าว ฯลฯ
