สาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีนให้ความสำคัญกับกลุ่มประเทศอาเซียนเพิ่มมากขึ้น ทั้งนี้มีจุดมุ่งหมายที่จะสร้างสันติภาพ ความเข้าใจและความร่วมมือระหว่างกัน เพื่อส่งผลให้เกิดการพัฒนาเส้นทางสายไหมทางทะเลในศตวรรษที่ 21 โดยสาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีนมุ่งหวังว่าก่อนปี 2020 จะให้มีจำนวนนักศึกษาจีนที่ไปเรียนต่อในประเทศอาเซียนปีละ 1 แสนคน ขณะที่มีนักศึกษาจากประเทศอาเซียนมาเรียนต่อในจีนในจำนวนเท่ากัน
รายงานจำนวนนิสิตต่างชาติระดับปริญญาโท ภาคการศึกษา 1/2557 จำแนกตามคณะ และสาขาวิชา ของจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัยพบว่า นิสิตต่างชาติจำนวนทั้งหมด 436 คนนั้น มีนิสิตจากสาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีน (CN) มาเรียนที่จุฬาฯ มากที่สุดเป็นอันดับที่ 1 จำนวนทั้งสิ้น 60 คน สำหรับในระดับปริญญาตรี และปริญญาเอกจะมีนิสิตจากสาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีนไม่ได้สูงมากเป็นอันดับที่ 1 แต่ก็ถือว่า นิสิตจากสาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีนค่อนข้างมีจำนวนมากติด 1 ใน 5 ของจำนวนนิสิตต่างชาติทั้งหมด
แม้ว่า นิสิตจากสาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีนจะเป็นนิสิตต่างชาติอันดับต้นๆ ที่เลือกเรียนที่จุฬาฯ แต่ก็ยังถือว่า มีจำนวนที่น้อยมาก เมื่อเทียบกับจำนวนนักเรียนนักศึกษาที่เดินทางไปศึกษาต่อต่างประเทศปีละ 100,000 คน ตามนโยบายของรัฐบาลสาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีน ดังนั้น จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย จึงเล็งเห็นโอกาสสำคัญนี้ ที่จะเชิญชวนให้นักเรียนนักศึกษาในสาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีนได้รับรู้และสนใจมาศึกษาในหลักสูตรนานาชาติของจุฬาฯ ให้เพิ่มมากยิ่งขึ้น จึงได้เดินทางเข้าร่วมงานนิทรรศการการศึกษานานาชาติ “The Eleventh Yunnan International Education Exhibition 2015” ณ นครคุนหมิง มณฑลยูนนาน สาธารณารัฐประชาชนจีน
งานนิทรรศการการศึกษานานาชาติ The Eleventh Yunnan International Education Exhibition 2015 มีหน่วยงานจากประเทศไทยที่เข้าร่วม ได้แก่ สำนักงานคณะกรรมการการอุดมศึกษา (สกอ.) มหาวิทยาลัยพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าคุณทหารลาดกระบัง มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ มหาวิทยาลัยแม่ฟ้าหลวง มหาวิทยาลัยนเรศวร มหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ มหาวิทยาลัยอัสสัมชัญ มหาวิทยาลัยธุรกิจบัณฑิตย์ มหาวิทยาลัยนานาชาติแสตมฟอร์ด (ประเทศไทย) มหาวิทยาลัยเว็บสเตอร์ (Webster University) ทั้งนี้จากจำนวนผู้เข้าร่วมงานทั้งหมดประมาณ 500 คน มีผู้เข้ามาเยี่ยมชมบูธของจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัยประมาณ 100 คน และลงทะเบียนให้ความสนใจที่จะมาศึกษาต่อในจุฬาฯ ถึง 30 คน ซึ่งเมื่อเทียบกับจำนวนผู้เข้าเยี่ยมชมบูธมหาวิทยาลัยไทยอื่นๆ แล้ว จุฬาฯ ได้รับความสนใจจากนักเรียนจีนเป็นอันดับแรก เนื่องจากชื่อเสียงของมหาวิทยาลัย คุณภาพในการเรียนการสอน สิ่งอำนวยความสะดวกที่ทางจุฬาฯ ได้เตรียมไว้ให้กับนิสิตต่างชาติ และกิจกรรมต่างๆ มากมายที่นิสิตต่างชาติจะได้สัมผัส ดังนั้นจึงไม่แปลกใจว่าทำไมนิสิตจีนถึงให้ความสนใจเข้ามาศึกษาต่อในจุฬาฯ เป็นอันดับแรก
