สิ่งแวดล้อมแบ่งโดยลักษณะการดำรงชีวิต แบ่งได้ 2 ประเภท คือ
1. สิ่งแวดล้อมมีชีวิต (Biotic Environments) หมายถึง สิ่งแวดล้อมเป็นสิ่งมีชีวิต เช่น จุลินทรีย์ พืช และสัตว์ รวมถึงมนุษย์ด้วย
2. สิ่งแวดล้อมที่ไม่มีชีวิต ( Abiotic Environments ) หมายถึงสิ่งแวดล้อมที่ไม่มีคุณสมบัติของสิ่งมีชีวิต ซึ่งอาจเกิดขึ้นโดยธรรมชาติหรือมนุษย์สร้างขึ้น เช่น อากาศ น้ำ แสงสว่าง เครื่องจักร เครื่องยนต์ เครื่องอุปโภคบริโภค เป็นต้น
