มีเนื้อที่ประมาณ 40 acres (160,000 m2) เริ่มเปิดให้บริการนักท่องเที่ยวตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ.2001. เปิดให้บริการระหว่างเวลา 09.00 - 17.00 น. ปิดบริการทุกวันจันทร์ ยกเว้นวันจันทร์ที่ตรงกับวัดหยุดนักขัตฤกษ์จะเปิดให้บริการตามปกติ
เป็นพิพิธภัณฑ์แห่งแรกที่ค้นพบซากดึกดำบรรพ์เศษกระดูกไดโนเสาร์ ที่ถูกวินิจฉัยว่าเป็นเศษส่วนปลายของกระดูกขาหลังท่อนบนด้านซ้ายของไดโนเสาร์ซอริสเชียในกลุ่มซอโรพอดถูกค้นพบโดยนายสุธรรม แย้มนิยม ในปี ค.ศ.1976 หลังจากนั้นจึงมีการทำการสำรวจบริเวณรอบๆเทือกเขาภูเวียงอย่างต่อเนื่อง มีการค้นพบกระดูก ฟัน และรอยตีนไดโนเสาร์จำนวนมาก มีทั้งไดโนเสาร์ซอโรพอดและเทอร์โรพอด หลากหลายสายพันธุ์ และมีขนาดตั้งแต่ตัวเท่าแม่ไก่ ไปจนถึงมีลำตัวยาวจากหัวจรดหางมากกว่า 15 เมตร จากการค้นพบที่กล่าวมาทำให้คนส่วนใหญ่รู้สึกสนใจและเดินทางไปท่องเที่ยวเพื่อเยี่ยมชมมาก รวมไปถึงการเสด็จพระราชดำเนินทอดพระเนตรหลุมขุดค้นที่ 2 ของสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี เมื่อวันที่ 3 พฤศจิกายน 1989. และได้เสด็จพระราชดำเนินพาคณะกรรมการรางวัลนานาชาติสมเด็จเจ้าฟ้ามหิดล มูลนิธิรางวัลสมเด็จเจ้าฟ้ามหิดล ในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์ ทอดพระเนตรพิพิธภัณฑ์ไดโนเสาร์ภูเวียง เมื่อวันที่ 25 ตุลาคม 2008.
