กาพย์ มาจากคำว่า “กาวฺย” หรือ “กาพฺย” ซึ่งมาจากคำว่า “กวิ” ในภาษาบาลีสันสกฤตแปลว่า ผู้คงแก่เรียน ผู้เฉลียวฉลาด ผู้มีปัญญาเปรื่องปราด ผู้ประพันธ์กาพย์กลอน
