ยี่เข่งมีต้นแตกกอ แตกกิ่งก้านสาขาออกรอบๆ ต้น ผิวต้นสีเทาเกือบขาว เรียบ ลอกได้เป็นแผ่นบางๆ กิ่งก้านอ่อน มีปีกแคบๆ ดูเหมือนเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยม ต้นสูงประมาณ 7 เมตร ใบ เดี่ยว ออกตรงข้ามเรียงเป็นคู่ๆ ไปตามข้อต้น แต่ใบที่อยู่ตรงส่วนยอดของต้นจะออกสลับกัน ใบเป็นรูปไข่ โคนใบมน ปลายมนหรือแหลม ขอบใบเรียบ ผิวใบเรียบและมัน ท้องใบตรง เส้นกลางใบมีขนสั้นๆ ปกคลุมเล็กน้อย ใบกว้าง 2-4 ซม. ยาว 2.5- 7 ซม. สีเขียว ใบแทบจะไม่มีก้านใบเลย ดอกช่อ ออกเป็นช่ออยู่ที่ยอดของต้น ส่วนล่างของดอกเป็นเส้นกลมเล็กๆ ส่วนบนบานแผ่ออกเป็นกลีบกลมขอบหยิก มีรอยยับย่น 6 กลีบ สีม่วง หรือชมพู ขาว แดงแก่ แดงอ่อน แดงดำ เกสรกลางดอกปลายเป็นตุ้มสีเหลือง ดอกบานเต็มที่ประมาณ 4 ซม.ดอกเล็กกว่าดอกลั่นทมเล็กน้อย มีทั้งดอกซ้อนและดอกลา ดอกซ้อนกลิ่นหอมเย็น ผล เมื่อดอกร่วงโรยไปจะเป็นผลรูปทรงกลมยาวประมาณ 1 ซม. กว้างประมาณ 1 ซม. ออกดอกตลอดปี การขยายพันธุ์ เพาะเมล็ด ตอนกิ่งปักชำ ประโยชน์ ใบ เป็นยาบำรุงหัวใจ ดอก ใช้ทาแก้ผดผื่นคัน แก้บิด รากและเปลือกเป็นพิษใช้ผสมยาแก้โรคผิวหนัง ถิ่นกำเนิด จีน เป็นผู้นำเข้าตอนปลายรัชกาลที่ 3 เจริญเติบโตได้ดีในดินที่ร่วนซุย ทนแล้ง น้ำกร่อย น้ำเค็มได้
