ความเป็นมา

                แข่งเรือคนเป็นกีฬาพื้นเมืองของภาคกลาง พบว่ามีการเล่นแข่งเรือคนกันแล้วในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๗ แห่งกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ ก่อนปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๐ แข่งเรือคนมีการเล่นกันแพร่หลายแทบทุกจังหวัด เช่น จังหวัดพระนครศรีอยุธยา นครปฐม กาญจนบุรี สมุทรสงคราม ฉะเชิงเทรา และ สุพรรณบุรี บางแห่งมีการเล่นแบบเดียวกันแต่เรียกชื่อแตกต่างกันออกไป เช่น จังหวัดอยุธยา เรียกว่า “แข่งเรือกบ” จังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี เรียกว่า “แข่งเรือโดยวิธีซ่อนพาย” จังหวัดฉะเชิงเทรา เรียกว่า “ซ่อนเรือ” เป็นต้น การเล่นแข่งเรือคนเป็นการเล่นเลียนแบบการแข่งเรือใช้น้ำโดยใช้คนนั่งต่อๆกันเป็นแถวตอน ๒ แถวขนานกัน สมมติว่าเป็นลำเรือแต่ละแถวจะผลัดกันซ่อนสิ่งของที่ตกลงกันไว้ที่ผู้เล่นในแถวแล้วผลัดกันทายแถวใดทายถูกจะได้เลื่อนคนท้ายขึ้นไปนั่งข้างหน้า แถวใดถึงเส้นชัยก่อนจะชนะการเล่นแข่งเรือคนเป็นการเล่นของคนหนุ่มสาวสมัยก่อน เล่นกันในเทศกาลงานรื่นเริงต่างๆ เช่น วัน ตรุษสงกรานต์ วันขึ้นปีใหม่ และวันที่มีงานรื่นเริงประจำปี เป็นต้น ปัจจุบันไม่ค่อยนิยมเล่นกันแล้ว จะมีการเล่นอยู่บ้างในเขตชนบทซึ่งกลายเป็นกีฬาที่เล่นกันในหมู่เด็กๆเล่นเพื่อความสนุกสนานเพลิดเพลิน ผู้ใหญ่ไม่นิยมเล่นกันแล้ว

                ผู้เล่น

                เล่นได้ทุกเพศทุกวัย สมัยก่อนมักจะเล่นกันในหมู่คนหนุ่มสาว โดยแบ่งผู้เล่นออกเป็น ๒ ฝ่าย ฝ่ายละเท่าๆกัน จำนวนผู้เล่นแต่ละฝ่ายไม่ควรน้อยกว่าฝ่ายละ ๕ – ๗ คน บางแห่งนิยมจัดให้ผู้ชายเป็นฝ่ายหนึ่ง หญิงเป็นอีกฝ่ายหนึ่ง

                อุปกรณ์การเล่น

                ไม้สั้นๆ ๒ อัน ขนาดเท่าๆกันพอใช้มือกำได้มิด จะให้เด่นชัดควรทาสีไว้ที่ไม้ด้วย เช่น ทาสีแดง สีเหลือง หรือสีเขียว เป็นต้น เพื่อจะได้ทราบว่าเป็นไม้ของกลางจริง

                สถานที่เล่น

                บริเวณลานกว้าง เช่น ลานบ้าน ลานวัด หรือบริเวณลานกว้างใต้ร่มไม้ กำหนดเส้นยาวไว้ที่พื้นดินเป็นเส้นเริ่ม จากเส้นเริ่มเป็นระยะห่างประมาณ ๑๐ – ๒๐ เมตร ตามแต่จะตกลงกันไว้ ให้เขียนเส้นยาวไว้ที่พื้นเป็นเส้นชัย

                วิธีเล่น

                ๓. ให้ผลัดกันซ่อนและผลัดกันทายฝ่ายละครั้ง เรื่อยไปจนกว่าฝ่ายใดจะต่อแถวของตนไปถึงเส้นชัยก่อน ฝ่ายนั้นจะเป็นผู้ชนะ

                กติกา
