จังหวัดเพชรบุรี (/เพ็ดชะบุรี/) เป็นจังหวัดหนึ่งในภาคกลางตอนล่าง (บ้างก็จัดอยู่ในภาคตะวันตก ด้านของการพยากรณ์อากาศจัดอยู่ภาคใต้ตอนบน มีภูมิประเทศทั้งเป็นที่สูงติดเทือกเขาและที่ราบชายฝั่งทะเล มักเรียกชื่อสั้น ๆ ว่า เมืองเพชร เดิมเรียก พริบพรี[3] และจากหลักฐานในสมัยพระเจ้าชัยวรมันที่ 7 ปรากฏชื่อว่า ศรีชัยวัชรปุระ [4]

ประวัติ[แก้]เพชรบุรีเป็นเมืองที่เคยรุ่งเรืองมาตั้งแต่สมัยโบราณและเป็นเมืองหน้าด่านที่สำคัญของไทยในกลุ่มหัวเมืองฝ่ายตะวันตก มีการติดต่อค้าขายกับต่างประเทศ มีหลักฐานชื่อเรียกปรากฏในหนังสือชาวต่างประเทศ เช่น ชาวฮอลันดาเรียกว่า “พิพรีย์” ชาวฝรั่งเศสเรียกว่า “พิพพีล์” และ “ฟิฟรี” จึงสันนิษฐานกันว่าชื่อ “เมืองพริบพรี” ซึ่งเป็นชื่อเดิมของเมืองเพชรบุรี ซึ่งสอดคล้องกับชื่อวัดพริบพลี ที่เป็นวัดเก่าแก่วัดหนึ่งของจังหวัด และที่วัดแห่งนี้ยังเป็นสถานที่ตั้งเสาชิงช้าอีกด้วย
