ลักษณะภูมิประเทศของภาคตะวันตก แบ่งออกได้เป็น 2 เขตใหญ่ คือ
เขตเทือกเขา ได้แก่ บริเวณเทือกเขา และที่สูงซึ่งอยู่ทางภาคตะวันตกของภาค เทือกเขา ที่เป็นพรมแดนกั้นระหว่างไทยกับพม่า ได้แก่
• เทือกเขาถนนธงชัย เป็นแนวแบ่งเขตระหว่างไทยกับพม่า จากจังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอนถึงตาก
• เทือกเขาหินปูน อยู่ระหว่างแม่น้ำแควใหญ่และแม่น้ำแควน้อย ส่วนใหญ่เป็นภูเขาหินปูน มีถ้ำหินงอกหินย้อย
• เทือกเขาตะนาวศรี เป็นแนวแบ่งเขตไทยกับพม่า มีช่องทางติดต่อที่ด่านสิงขร จังหวัดประจวบคีรีขันธ์ และด่านบ้องตี้ จังหวัดกาญจนบุรี
เขตที่ราบ ได้แก่ บริเวณที่อยู่ระหว่างเขตเทือกเขา กับที่ราบภาคกลาง และอ่าวไทย โดยมีอาณาบริเวณ ตั้งแต่ทางด้าน ตะวันออกของจังหวัดกาญจนบุรี ต่อมายังจังหวัดราชบุรีและ ประจวบคีรีขันธ์ แบ่งออกเป็น 2 เขตย่อย ได้แก่
• เขตที่ราบขั้นบันได : บริเวณ ที่ราบทางด้านตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ของจังหวัดกาญจนบุรี และราชบุรี เป็นที่ราบ ที่เกิดจากการสะสมตัว ของตะกอนโดยอิทธิพลของแม่น้ำ แม่กลอง และแม่น้ำท่า จีน ที่ราบในเขตนี้ จะสูงทางด้านตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือ ซึ่งติดต่อกับเขตเทือกเขาแล้วค่อยลาดต่ำลงมา ทางตะวันออก และตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ จนจดที่ราบภาคกลาง และอ่าวไทย มีลักษณะ คล้ายขั้นบันได
• เขตที่ราบชายฝังทะเล : บริเวณ ตั้งแต่ตอนเหนือของจังหวัดเพชรบุรีเลียบชายฝั่งทะเลลงไปจนสุดเขตจังหวัด ประจวบคีรีขันธ์ ที่ราบดังกล่าวนี้ เป็นที่ราบแคบๆ ยาวๆ ที่เกิดจากการกระทำ ของคลื่นซึ่งเป็น ที่ราบชายฝั่งทะเลยกตัว
ลักษณะภูมิประเทศเป็นภูเขาและหุบเขาภาคตะวันตก มีความคล้ายคลึงกับภาคเหนือคือมีภูเขาสูงๆสลับกับหุบเขาแคบๆเป็นแนวภูเขาที่สลับซับซ้อน และมีบริเวณส่วนหนึ่งที่อยู่ติดกับทะเลในเขตจังหวัดเพชรบุรีและจังหวัดประจวบคีรีขันธ์ ทิวเขาในภูมิภาคเป็นแนวต่อเนื่องมาจากทิวเขาในภาคเหนือ ได้แก่ ทิวเขาถนนธงชัยและทิวเขาตะนาวศรี ระหว่างเทือกเขาต่างๆ มีที่ราบลุ่มแม่น้ำสลับอยู่ ที่ราบลุ่มแม่น้ำ เหล่านี้ เกิดจากการยุบตัวของเปลือกโลก ที่เรียกว่า แอ่งกราเบน กลายเป็นหุบเขาและลุ่มแม่น้ำ บริเวณที่ยกตัวสูงขึ้น เรียกว่า ฮอร์สต์ กลายเป็นภูเขาและเทือกเขา ที่ราบลุ่มแม่น้ำสำคัญ ได้แก่ ที่ราบลุ่ม แม่น้ำแควใหญ่ ที่ราบลุ่มแม่น้ำแควน้อยและที่ราบลุ่มแม่น้ำ

เมื่อแบ่งพื้นที่ภาคตะวันตกตามระดับความสูง จะพบว่าพื้นที่ส่วนใหญ่ ร้อยละ 58 เป็นภูเขาสูง ร้อยละ 23 เป็นที่ราบ และร้อยละ 19 เป็น ที่ราบเชิงเขา ลักษณะภูมิประเทศของ ภาคตะวันตก คล้ายคลึงกับภาคเหนือ คือ เป็นเทือกเขาสูงสลับหุบเขาแคบ ทางตะวันตกจะมีเทือกเขา สูงเป็นแนวยาวต่อ เนื่องจากภาคเหนือทอดตัวลงไปทางภาคใต้ ส่วนทางตะวันออกจะเป็นที่ราบลุ่มแม่น้ำ และที่ราบชายฝั่งทะเล
