พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงตระหนักถึงสภาพปัญหาการชะล้างพังทลายของดินและการสูญเสียหน้าดินที่อุดมสมบูรณ์ จึงทรงศึกษาถึงศักยภาพของ “หญ้าแฝก” ซึ่งเป็นพืชพื้นบ้านของไทย ที่มีคุณสมบัติพิเศษในการช่วยป้องกันการชะล้างพังทลายของหน้าดินและอนุรักษ์ความชุ่มชื้นใต้ดิน ซึ่งมีวิธีการปลูกแบบง่าย ๆเกษตรกรสามารถดำเนินการได้เองโดยไม่ต้องให้การดูแลหลังการปลูกมากนัก ทั้งประหยัดค่าใช้จ่ายกว่าวิธีอื่น ๆ อีกด้วย จึงได้พระราชทานพระราชดำริให้ดำเนินการศึกษาทดลองเกี่ยวกับหญ้าแฝก ลักษณะของหญ้าแฝก หญ้าแฝกมีชื่อสามัญเป็นภาษาอังกฤษว่าVetiver Grass มีด้วยกัน 2 สายพันธุ์ คือ หญ้าแฝกดอน (Vetiveria nemoralisA. Camus) และหญ้าแฝกหอม (Vetiveria zizanioides Nash) เป็นพืชที่มีอายุได้หลายปี ขึ้นเป็นกอแน่น มีใบเป็นรูปขอบขนานแคบปลายสอบแหลม ยาว 35-80 ซม.มีส่วนกว้าง 5-9 มม. หญ้าแฝกจะมีการขยายพันธุ์ที่ได้ผลรวดเร็ว โดยการแตกหน่อจากลำต้นใต้ดิน ในบางโอกาสสามารถแตกแขนงและรากออกในส่วนของก้านช่อดอกได้ เมื่อหญ้าแฝกโน้มลงดินทำให้มีการเจริญเติบโตเป็นกอหญ้าแฝกใหม่ได้
