ร่องรอยของศิลปะกรรแบบศรีวิชัย มีลักษณะที่เป็นเอกลักษณะของตนเองอย่างเห็นได้ชัด ไม่ว่าจะเป็นด้านสถาปัตยกรรม ประติมากรรม และงานประณีตศิลป์ ล้วนแสดงถึงภูมิปัญญาอันสูงส่งของบรรพชนในรัฐสำคัญบนคาบสมุทรภาคใต้ แรกเริ่มได้มีการจัดหมวดหมู่ของศิลปะที่พบในประเทศไทยโดยเฉพาะภาคใต้ ภายหลักจากที่ศาสตราจารย์เซเดส์ได้เสนอทฤษฎีเกี่ยวกับอาณาจักรศรีวิชัย สมเด็จฯ กรมพระยาดำรงราชานุภาพ ก็ทรงผนวกศิลปวัตถุที่พบในภาคใต้ของประเทศไทยทั้งหมดว่า เป็นโบราณวัตถุของรัฐศรีวิชัย ต่อมาศาสตราจารย์หม่อมเจ้าสุภัทรดิศ ดิศกุล โอรสในสมเด็จฯ กรมพระยาดำรงฯ ได้ทรงจัดหมวดหมู่ศิลปะในประเทศไทย โดยจัดศิลปะโบราณวัตถุที่พบในภาคใต้ที่สร้างขึ้นเนื่องในพุทธศาสนามหายาน เรียกว่า “ศิลปะศรีวิชัย” ส่วนเทวรูปในศาสนาฮินดูที่พบทั้งก่อนหน้าและร่วมสมัย แยกออกมาเป็น “ศิลปะเทวรูปรุ่นเก่า”
ต่อมาพิริยะ ไกรฤกษ์ ได้พยายามจัดหมวดหมู่ศิลปะที่พบในภาคใต้ใหม่ โดยเขียนไว้ในหนังสือ ศิลปะทักษิณก่อนพุทธศตวรรษที่ ๑๙ เรียกศิลปะที่พบในภาคใต้ว่าศิลปะทักษิณ โดยคำนึกถึงความหลากหลายของอิทธิพลทางศิลปะที่ได้รับในแต่ละช่วง ในหนังสือเล่มนี้ได้ละลายคำว่า ศิลปะศรีวิชัยลง และโบราณวัตถุสถานที่อยู่ในช่วงศรีวิชัย ได้จัดให้เป็นศิลปะไชยา รุ่นต่างๆ ซึ่งทฤษฎีนี้ถึงแม้จะเป็นทฤษฎีที่จัดรูปแบบศิลปะได้อย่างละเอียด แต่ไม่ได้รับความนิยม เนื่องจาก คำว่า ศรีวิชัย ได้กลายเป็นที่นิยมของคนโดยทั่วไปแล้ว ประกอบกับการใช้คำว่า ศิลปะไชยา ดูจะแคบเกินไปสำหรับศิลปะทั้งหมดที่พบในภาคใต้ ในที่นี้ คำว่า “ศิลปะศรีวิชัย” จึงยังคงอนุโลมใช้เป็นชื่อเรียกศิลปะเนื่องในคติพุทธศาสนามหายานที่พบในภาคใต้ต่อไป ทั้งที่ยังไม่ทราบแน่ชัดว่า ศรีวิชัย นั้น ตั้งอยู่ที่ใดกันแน่

ส่วนวัดแก้วและวัดหลงเหลือเพียงฐานที่มีความสูงและเรือนธาตุ ที่วัดแก้วประดับด้วยเสาที่อิงตัวอาคาร ทำให้มีลักษณะคล้ายกับศิลปะจามของอาณาจักรจามปาตางตอนกลางของประเทศเวียดนาม ส่วนที่โบราณสถานเมืองยะรังจังหวัดปัตตานี เหลือเพียงฐานขนาดใหญ่ที่แสดงให้เห็นอิทธิพลของศิลปะอินเดียแบบคุปตะคล้ายกับที่พบในศิลปะทวารวดีทางภาคกลาง
นอกจากนี้ยังมีสถูปรูปโอคว่ำ พบที่วัดสทิงพระ วัดพะโคะและวัดสีหยัง จังหวัดสงขลา กับที่วัดมหาธาตุนครศรีธรรมราช
