กีฬาเปตองได้เริ่มเข้ามาในประเทศไทยเมื่อ พ.ศ 2518 โดยการริเริ่มของ นายจันทร์ โพยหาญ ซึ่งเป็นผู้บุกเบิก และนำกีฬาเปตองเข้ามาเผยแพร่ให้คนได้รู้จักอย่างเป็นทางการคนแรก แต่ขณะนั้นยังขาดอุปกรณ์การเล่นเปตอง (ลูกบูล) จึงได้ปรึกษาและชักชวนนายดนัย ตรีทัศนาถาวร และนายชัยรัตน์ คำนวณ ซึ่งเป็นนักธุรกิจที่มีชื่อเสียงมากในขณะนั้น เป็นผู้ลงทุนสั่งลูกเปตองเข้ามาจำหน่ายและเผยแพร่ในประเทศไทย

ต่อมานายจันทร์ ได้นำเรื่องนี้ไปปรึกษากันนายศรีภูมิ สุขเนตร ซึ่งเป็นอดีตนักเรียนเก่าฝรั่งเศส ซึ่งมีความรู้ ความสามารถในเรื่องของกีฬาเปตองเป็นอย่างดี และอีกท่านยังไม่ได้กล่าวนาม ได้ร่วมกันจัดตั้งสมาคมเปตองและโปรวังซาลแห่งประเทศไทยขึ้น เมื่อวันที่ 18 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2519 โดยมีนายศรีภูมิ สุขเนตร เป็นนายกสมาคมคนแรก แต่ก็ไม่ประสบความสำเร็จเท่าที่ควร เพราะยังขาดผู้สนับสนุน จนคิดว่าจะล้มเลิกความมุ่งหมายที่จะเผยแพร่ต่อไปอีก
แต่ต่อมาเมื่อสมเด็จพระศรีนครินทรบรมราชชนนี เสด็จพระราชดำเนินที่เขื่อนห้วยหลวง จังหวัดอุดรธานี เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2521 นายจันทร์ ได้นำอุปกรณ์กีฬาเปตองไปแนะนำวิธีการเล่นให้แก่ข้าราชบริพาร และพระองค์ทรงโปรดปรานมาก ทรงรับสั่งว่า “พระองค์เคยเล่นกีฬาประเภทนี้ตั้งแต่พระองค์พระชนมายุ 30 กว่า กีฬาเปตองมีประโยชน์มากได้ทั้งบริหารร่างกายเพื่อให้มีสุขภาพดี และสร้างสรรค์ความสามัคคีในหมู่คณะซึ่งมีประโยชน์มากมายสำหรับคนไทย ขอให้นายจันทร์ โพยหาญ จงทำหน้าที่ต่อไป พระองค์ช่วงส่งเสริม และเผยแพร่ให้อีกทางหนึ่ง”
ดังนั้นในวันที่ 9 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2527 สมเด็จพระศรีนครินทราบรมราชชนนีทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ รับสมาคมเปตอง และโปรวังซาลแห่งประเทศไทย ไว้ในพระราชูปถัมภ์ เมื่อวันที่ 22 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2530 ได้เปลี่ยนชื่อสมาคมเปตองและโปรวังซาลเป็น “สหพันธ์เปตองแห่งประเทศไทยในพระราชูปถัมภ์สมเด็จพระศรีนครินทราบรมราชชนนี” ต่อมาได้แก้ไขข้อบังคับสหพันธ์ฯ เพื่อให้เป็นไปตาม พ.ร.บ. การกีฬาแห่งประเทศไทย จึงเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็นสหพันธ์เปตองแห่งประเทศไทยเป็น “สมาคมเปตองแห่งประเทศไทย” เมื่อวันที่ 12 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2543 และได้รับการรับรองจากการกีฬาแห่งประเทศไทย สนับสนุนงบประมาณเป็นเงินอุดหนุนสมาคมฯ ประจำปีจากรัฐบาลตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2538 เป็นต้นมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน และได้เข้าร่วมเป็นสมาชิกสหพันธ์เปตองนานาชาติ เป็นประเทศที่ 17 ของโลก
