สำนักหอสมุด มหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ ก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2505 โดยในครั้งแรกใช้ชื่อว่า ห้องสมุดวิทยาลัยไทยเทคนิค และเมื่อมีการเปลี่ยนชื่อสถาบันจาก วิทยาลัยไทยเทคนิค มาเป็น วิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ จึงได้มีการเปลี่ยนชื่อ ห้องสมุดวิทยาลัยไทยเทคนิค เป็น แผนกห้องสมุดวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ จากนั้นเมื่อคณะกรรมการสถาบันอุดมศึกษาเอกชน มีมติอนุมัติให้ วิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ เปลี่ยนวิทยฐานะเป็น มหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ แผนกห้องสมุดวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพจึงได้รับการปรับฐานะให้เป็นสำนักหอสมุดกลาง มหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ และล่าสุดได้เปลี่ยนเป็น สำนักหอสมุด เมื่อเดือน พ.ค. 2545 ภายหลังจากย้ายที่ทำการไปยังหอสมุดสุรัตน์ โอสถานุเคราะห์ 
ปี พ.ศ. 2535 มหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพได้จัดสร้างอาคารสำนักหอสมุดใหม่  วิทยาเขตรังสิต ตั้งอยู่ที่ ชั้น 2 ของอาคาร 1 อาคาร 2 และอาคาร 3 มีพื้นที่ 1,624.50 ตร.ม. มีที่นั่งอ่านหนังสือจำนวนกว่า 1,000 ที่นั่ง
