ประวัติความเป็นมา
งานประเพณีปอยส่างลองหรืองานบวชลูกแก้ว เป็นประเพณีบวชเณรตามธรรมเนียมของชาวไทยใหญ่ เพื่อให้บุตรหลานได้มีโอกาสศึกษาพระธรรมคำสั่งสอนของพระพุทธเจ้าและมีความเชื่อว่าจะได้รับบุญกุศลจากการบวชสามเณร งานนี้จัดให้มีขึ้นช่วงเดือนมีนาคม-เมษายน ช่วงปิดเทอมฤดูร้อน โดยชาวบ้านจะตกลงกันกำหนดวันนัดหมายให้ลูกหลานได้บวชเรียนพร้อมๆ กัน มีการประดับประดาผู้ที่จะบวชด้วยเครื่องประดับมีค่าอย่างสวยงาม และประกอบพิธีบวชตามวัดที่เจ้าภาพศรัทธา
แต่เดิมปอยส่างลองเป็นประเพณีที่จัดเฉพาะในหมู่ญาติมิตรของเจ้าภาพ ต่อมาเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2525 ได้เกิดมีแนวความคิดใหม่โดยจัดเป็นบรรพชาหมู่ร่วมกันมากถึง 200 รูป เนื่องในโอกาสเฉลิมฉลองกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ครบ 200 ปี ทำให้ในเขตอำเภอเมืองแม่ฮ่องสอนนิยมจัดบรรพชาหมู่สืบต่อมาถึงปัจจุบัน ปอยส่างลองจึงได้กลายเป็นประเพณีที่จูงใจให้มีผู้สนใจมากขึ้นกว่าแต่ก่อน
