เดิมชื่อวัดบางหว้าใหญ่ เป็นพระอารามหลวง เป็นวัดโบราณ สร้างในสมัยอยุธยา สมัยรัชกาลที่1 ได้ขุดพบระฆังภายในวัด จึงได้พระราชทานนามว่า "วัดระฆังโฆสิตาราม"
