e-Learning ที่ดีควรจะประกอบไปด้วยลักษณะสำคัญ ดังนี้
1. Anywhere , anytime หมายถึง e-Learning ควรต้องช่วยขยายโอกาสในการเข้าถึงเนื้อหาการเรียนรู้ของผู้เรียนได้จริง ในที่นี้หมายรวมถึง การที่ผู้เรียนสามารถเรียกดูเนื้อหาตามความสะดวกของผู้เรียน ยกตัวอย่างเช่น ในประเทศไทยควรมีการใช้เทคโนโลยีการนำเสนอเนื้อหาที่สามารถเรียกดูได้ทั้งขณะที่ออนไลน์ (เครื่องมีการต่อเชื่อมกับเครือข่าย) และในขณะที่ออฟไลน์ (เครื่องไม่การการต่อเชื่อมกับเครือข่าย)

4. Interaction หมายถึง e-Learning ควรต้องมีการเปิดโอกาสให้ผู้เรียนโต้ตอบ (มีปฏิสัมพันธ์) กับเนื้อหาหรือกับผู้อื่นได้ กล่าวคือ

3. Immediate Response หมายถึง e-Learning ควรต้องมีการออกแบบให้มีการทดสอบ การวัดผล และการประเมินผล ซึ่งให้ผลป้อนกลับโดยทันทีแก่ผู้เรียนไม่ว่าจะอยู่ในลักษณะของแบ -ทดสอบก่อนเรียน (pre-test) หรือแบบทดสอบหลังเรียน (posttest) ก็ตาม
