ข้อมูลความเป็นมา
อุทยานแห่งชาติทับลาน มีพื้นที่ครอบคลุมท้องที่อำเภอปักธงชัย อำเภอวังน้ำเขียว อำเภอครบุรี อำเภอเสิงสาง จังหวัดนครราชสีมา และอำเภอนาดี จังหวัดปราจีนบุรี สภาพป่ามีความอุดมสมบูรณ์และมีป่าลาน ซึ่งหาดูได้ยากที่มีเฉพาะบางท้องที่เท่านั้น มีต้นลานขึ้นตามธรรมชาติ เป็นแหล่งกำเนิดของแม่น้ำ ลำธารต่างๆ และมีธรรมชาติที่สวยงาม เช่น หุบผา หน้าผา น้ำตก เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติที่มีเนื้อที่ใหญ่เป็นอันดับสองของประเทศ คือ มีเนื้อที่ประมาณ 1,397,375ไร่ หรือ 2,235.80 ตารางกิโลเมตร
ในอดีตป่าลานที่อุดมสมบูรณ์มีขึ้นอยู่กระจายทั่วๆ ไปในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ต่อมามีการขยายตัวของพื้นที่เกษตรกรรม จึงทำให้ป่าลานได้ถูกบุกรุกทำลายลงไปมาก จนปัจจุบันคงเหลือป่าลานแห่งสุดท้าย คือ บริเวณบ้านทับลาน บ้านขุนศรี บ้านบุพราหมณ์ และบ้านวังมืด จังหวัดปราจีนบุรี ในการไปตรวจสอบสภาพป่าลานเมื่อวันที่ 24 มีนาคม 2517 นายประดิษฐ์ วนาพิทักษ์ อธิบดีกรมป่าไม้ พบว่า ป่าลานในบริเวณดังกล่าวเป็นป่าลานแห่งสุดท้ายของประเทศเพื่ออนุรักษ์ป่าลานไว้ จึงมีดำริให้จัดตั้งป่าลานนี้เนื้อที่ประมาณ 36,250 ไร่ หรือ 58 ตารางกิโลเมตร เป็นวนอุทยาน และในการประชุมคณะกรรมการอุทยานแห่งชาติครั้งที่ 1/2518 เมื่อวันที่ 4 เมษายน 2518 ได้มีมติให้ดำเนินการวางแผนปฏิบัติการที่ป่าลานกบินทร์บุรี ซึ่งสำนักงานป่าไม้เขตปราจีนบุรี ได้มีคำสั่งที่ 169/2518 ลงวันที่ 11 เมษายน 2518 และคำสั่งที่ 194/2518 ลงวันที่ 15 เมษายน 2518 ให้ นายสุชล ผาติเสนะ นักวิชาการป่าไม้ตรี และ นายยัณห์ ทักสูงเนิน พนักงานประจำเขต โดยอยู่ในความควบคุมการดำเนินงานของนายไพโรจน์ เชี่ยวเอี่ยมวัฒนา นักวิชาการป่าไม้โท ไปดำเนินการรังวัดหมายแนวเขต และจัดพื้นที่ปรับปรุงให้เป็นวนอุทยานป่าลาน ในพื้นที่ป่าสงวนแห่งชาติแก่งดินสอ-แก่งใหญ่-เขาสะโตน จังหวัดปราจีนบุรี
ต่อมากองอุทยานแห่งชาติ กรมป่าไม้ ได้มีคำสั่งที่ 2383/2520 ลงวันที่ 8 ธันวาคม 2520 ให้นายเชาวลิต เลิศชยันตรี นักวิชาการป่าไม้ 5 ทำหน้าที่หัวหน้าวนอุทยานทับลาน และในปี พ.ศ. 2523 กองอุทยานแห่งชาติ ได้ให้วนอุทยานทับลานสำรวจพื้นที่โดยรอบ เพื่อผนวกพื้นที่บริเวณใกล้เคียงแนวเขตติดต่อวนอุทยาน ยกฐานะวนอุทยานทับลานเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติ ผลการสำรวจปรากฏว่า บริเวณป่าดังกล่าวโดยรอบมีสภาพป่าสมบูรณ์ มีทิวทัศน์สวยงาม สัตว์ป่าชุกชุมเป็นป่าต้นน้ำลำธารของแม่น้ำบางปะกงและแม่น้ำมูล ตามหนังสือรายงานผลการสำรวจ ที่ กส 0708(ทล.)/16 ลงวันที่ 25 กุมภาพันธ์ 2523 ทั้งเพื่อเป็นการสนองมติคณะรัฐมนตรี เมื่อวันที่ 9 มกราคม 2522 ที่ให้รักษาป่าไว้โดยการประกาศให้เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติ
กรมป่าไม้จึงเสนอให้คณะกรรมการอุทยานแห่งชาติ ซึ่งได้มีมติในการประชุมครั้งที่ 2/2523 เมื่อวันที่ 8 สิงหาคม 2523 เห็นสมควรออกพระราชกฤษฎีกากำหนดพื้นที่ป่าดังกล่าวเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติ โดยได้มีพระราชกฤษฎีกากำหนดบริเวณที่ดินป่าวังน้ำเขียวและป่าครบุรี ในท้องที่ตำบลสะแกราช ตำบลวังน้ำเขียว อำเภอปักธงชัย ตำบลครบุรี ตำบลจระเข้หิน ตำบลโคกกระชาย อำเภอครบุรี และตำบลสระตะเคียน ตำบลโนนสมบูรณ์ อำเภอเสิงสาง จังหวัดนครราชสีมา และป่าแก่งดินสอ ป่าแก่งใหญ่ และป่าเขาสะโตน ในท้องที่ตำบลบุพราหมณ์ ตำบลทุ่งโพธิ์ อำเภอนาดี จังหวัดปราจีนบุรี ให้เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติ ซึ่งประกาศไว้ในราชกิจจานุเบกษาเล่ม 98 ตอนที่ 210 ลงวันที่ 23 ธันวาคม 2524 นับเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติลำดับที่ 39 ของประเทศ
ต่อมาได้มีมติคณะรัฐมนตรี เมื่อวันที่ 7 มิถุนายน 2531 อนุญาตให้กรมชลประทานใช้พื้นที่ในเขตอุทยานแห่งชาติทับลานบริเวณป่าวังน้ำเขียว ป่าครบุรี ป่าแก่งดินสอ ป่าแก่งใหญ่ และป่าเขาสะโตน บางส่วนในท้องที่ตำบลจระเข้หิน อำเภอครบุรี จังหวัดนครราชสีมา ก่อสร้างอ่างเก็บน้ำลำมูลบน เพื่อพัฒนาภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ซึ่งมีเนื้อที่ 2,625 ไร่ หรือ 4.20 ตารางกิโลเมตร โดยให้กระทรวงเกษตรและสหกรณ์ดำเนินการตามพระราชกฤษฎีกาเพิกถอนพื้นที่ส่วนนี้ออก และในปี 2532 จึงได้มีพระราชกฤษฎีกาเพิกถอนอุทยานแห่งชาติป่าวังน้ำเขียว ป่าครบุรี ป่าแก่งดินสอ ป่าแก่งใหญ่ และป่าเขาสะโตน บางส่วนในท้องที่ตำบลจระเข้หิน อำเภอครบุรี จังหวัดนครราชสีมา ออกจากการเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติตามที่กำหนดไว้โดยพระราชกฤษฎีกาเดิมปี พ.ศ. 2524 ซึ่งประกาศไว้ในราชกิจจานุเบกษาเล่ม 106 ตอนที่ 107 ลงวันที่ 7 กรกฎาคม 2532

ลักษณะภูมิประเทศ
