วันสิ่งแวดล้อมโลก วันที่ 5 -16 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2515 สหประชาชาติร่วมกับรัฐบาลประเทศสวีเดน ได้จัดการประชุมที่เรียกว่า “การประชุมสหประชาชาติเรื่องสิ่งแวดล้อมของมนุษย์” (UN Conference on The Humen Environment) ที่กรุงสต็อกโฮล์ม ประเทศสวีเดน โดยใช้เวลาเตรียมการประชุมครั้งนี้ถึง 3 ปี เพื่อจัดทำร่างข้อเสนอต่างๆ รวมทั้งแผนดำเนินการและปฏิญญาว่าด้วยสิ่งแวดล้อมของมนุษย์ มีผู้เข้าร่วมประชุม 1,200 คน จาก 113 ประเทศ ผู้สังเกตุการณ์มากกว่า 1,500 คน จากหน่วยงานรัฐ องค์กรเอกชนและสื่อมวลชนแขนงต่าง ๆ รวมทั้งตัวแทนเยาวชนและกลุ่มนักศึกษาจากทั่วโลก
