ความเป็นมา
ประเพณีสารทเดือนสิบวิวัฒนาการมาจากประเพณีเปตพลีของพราหมณ์ ซึ่งลูกหลานจัดขึ้น เพื่อทำบุญอุทิศส่วนกุศลให้แก่ผู้ล่วงลับไปแล้ว ต่อมาพวกพราหมณ์จำนวนมากได้หันมานับถือพระพุทธศาสนาและยังถือปฏิบัติในประเพณีดังกล่าวอยู่ พระพุทธองค์เห็นว่า ประเพณีนี้มีคุณค่า เป็นการแสดงออกซึ่งความกตัญญูกตเวทีต่อบรรพบุรุษนำความสุขใจให้ผู้ปฏิบัติ จึงทรงอนุญาตให้อุบาสกอุบาสิกาประกอบพิธีนี้ต่อไปได้ ประเพณีสารทเดือนสิบมีมาตั้งแต่พุทธกาลคาดว่า เมื่อพระพุทธศาสนาเผยแพร่เข้ามาในนครศรีธรรมราชจึงรับประเพณีนี้มาด้วย

ระยะเวลาดำเนินการ
วันแรม ๑ ค่ำ ถึงแรม ๑๕ ค่ำเดือนสิบ แต่ชาวนครศรีธรรมราช นิยมทำบุญคือ วันแรม ๑๓-๑๕ ค่ำ
สำหรับการจัดงานเดือนสิบจะเริ่มตั้งแต่วันแรม 9 ค่ำ เดือน 10 ถึง วันขึ้น 3 ค่ำ เดือน 11 ของทุกปี รวม 10 วัน 10 คืน

สาระสำคัญ
๑.เป็นการแสดงความกตัญญูกตเวทีต่อบรรพบุรุษ โดยรำลึกถึงคุณความดีของบรรพบุรุษที่ล่วงลับไปแล้ว
๒.เป็นโอกาสได้รวมญาติที่อยู่ห่างไกลได้มาพบปะซักถามสารทุกข์สุกดิบต่อกันและได้โอกาสทำบุญร่วมกัน
๓.เป็นการเก็บเสบียงอาหารมีทั้งพืชผักอาหารแห้ง อาหารสำเร็จรูปจัดนำไปถวายในรูปหมรับหรือสำรับ เพื่อที่ทางวัดจะได้เก็บรักษาไว้เป็นเสบียงสำหรับพระภิกษุสงฆ์ในฤดูฝน
