ประเพณีสวดกลางบ้านเป็นประเพณีที่สำคัญและเก่าแก่อย่างหนึ่งของจังหวัดชุมพร ซึ่งถือปฏิบัติกันมาแต่โบราณ มีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อขับไล่เสนียดจัญไร ภูติผีปีศาจ โรคภัยไข้เจ็บ และความชั่วร้ายทั้งปวงเพื่อความเป็นสิริมงคลแก่ชาวบ้านและหมู่บ้าน นอกจากนี้ยังถือเป็นการทำบุญร่วมกันของคนในหมู่บ้านเพื่อเป็นการพบปะสังสรรค์อันจะก่อให้เกิดความสามัคคี ซึ่งเป็นผลดีต่อการประกอบกิจกรรมอื่น ๆ ของหมู่บ้านด้วย
