Grice’s maximsและถ้าไม่ท าตาม maxims เหล่านี้(rules for behaviors) ก็จะก่อให้เกิดความไม่เหมาะสม ( infelicity)

1. Maxim of Quality (กฎของการคุณภาพ)
โดยมีหลักกว้างๆสองข้อดังต่อไปนี้
1. a. Do not say what you believe to be false.
b. Do not say that for which you lack adequate evidence.
ในข้อ (1a) ก็คือว่าคุณต้องไม่โกหกนั่นเอง และข้อ (1b) หมายถึง ถ้าไม่มีหลักฐานพอก็ไม่ควรกล่าวอ้างอะไร ข้อ (1b) นี้
ขึ้นอยู่กับบริบท (relative to the context) คือปริมาณของหลักฐานไม่จ าเป็นต้องเหมือนกันในทุกสถานการณ์ ขึ้นอยู่กับใคร
พูดกับใคร ในบริบทไหน เช่นเพื่อนอาจจะบอกเพื่อนด้วยกันว่า “ผักติ้วรักษาคออักเสบได้” จากประสบการณ์ของตัวเอง

2. Maxim of Relevance(กฎของการเกี่ยวข้องกัน)
จะพูดอะไรก็ให้เกี่ยวของกับการสนทนา (say what is relevant to the discourse) กฎข้อนี้คงเข้าใจได้ไม่ยาก เช่น ถ้ามีคน
ถามว่า “เมื่อเช้ากินอะไร” แต่เรากลับตอบว่า “ผักมีประโยชน์ต่อสุขภาพ” ค าตอบไม่มีความสัมพันธ์เกี่ยวข้องกับค าถาม
3. Maxim of Quantity (กฎของปริมาณ)
ประกอบด้วยข้อย่อยสองข้อดังนี้
