ความสำคัญ
งานสมโภชพระพุทธชินราชมีมาแต่โบราณกาล เมื่อพระมหากษัตริย์เสด็จมานมัสการพระพุทธชินราชแล้ว ทรงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้มีงานฉลองสมโภชพระพุทธชินราช ๓ วันบ้าง ๕ วันบ้าง ๗ วันบ้าง ต่อมาทางจังหวัดพิษณุโลกได้ริเริ่มกำหนดเป็นงานประจำปีขึ้น เมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๗ โดยกำหนดเอาวันเพ็ญเดือนสามเป็นต้นไปมีการฉลอง ๗ วัน ๗ คืน เพื่อให้ประชาชนได้มานมัสการพระพุทธชินราช เพื่อเป็นศิริมงคล และพักผ่อนหย่อนใจด้วยการชมมหรสพ เลือกซื้อสินค้าพื้นบ้านจากจังหวัดพิษณุโลกและจังหวัดต่าง ๆ กลับบ้านไปเป็น ที่ระลึกและใช้ในครอบครัว

พิธีกรรม
พิธีกรรมจะมี ๒ ช่วง คือ พิธีเปิดงาน และพิธีไหว้พระพุทธชินราชของ ประชาชน
พิธีเปิดงาน จะจัดงานในตอนเย็นของวันก่อนวันงาน โดยนิมนต์พระสงฆ์ ผู้ใหญ่ทำพิธีทางศาสนา และเชิญผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดเป็นประธานในพิธี ผู้ร่วมงานได้แก่ ข้าราชการ พ่อค้า ประชาชนทั่วไป โดยมีพิธีการดังนี้
๑. สวดมนต์ไหว้พระรับศีล และพระสงฆ์สวดมนต์
๒. ทำพิธีเปิดงาน (เหมือนพิธีเปิดงานทั่วไป) โดยผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดพิษณุโลกเป็นผู้กล่าวเปิดงาน
๓. พระสงฆ์สวดชัยมงคลคาถา
๔. ถวายจตุปัจจัยไทยทานแด่พระสงฆ์
๕. พระสงฆ์สวดให้พรเป็นจบพิธีช่วงแรก หลังจากนั้นวันรุ่งขึ้น ซึ่งเป็นวันงานประชาชนจะเข้านมัสการโดยมีพิธีการดังนี้
- จุดธูปเทียน และนำดอกไม้มาบูชาพระ
- กราบไหว้พระพุทธชินราชในวิหาร อธิษฐานขอความสวัสดี และความเป็นมงคลให้เกิดแก่ตน
- หลังจากนั้นอาจจะมีการปล่อยนก ปล่อยปลา ปล่อยเต่า ตามความเชื่อ
การจัดงานสมโภชนอกจากพิธีทางศาสนาแล้ว ยังมีมหรสพทั้งดนตรี ภาพยนตร์ ลิเก การละเล่นพื้นเมือง และการออกร้านจำหน่ายสินค้า เครื่องอุปโภค บริโภค ของที่ระลึก สินค้าพื้นเมืองจากกลุ่มแม่บ้านหน่วยงานเอกชน จากจังหวัดพิษณุโลก และจังหวัดอื่น ๆ ในทุกภาคของประเทศไทย
