ประวัติ / ความเป็นมา
วัดสุทัศเทพวรารามวรมหาวิหาร เป็นพระอามามหลวงชั้นเอก และเป็นวัดประจำรัชกาลที่ 8 แห่งกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ เดิมชื่อ “วัดมหาสุทธาวาส” วันนี้เริ่มสร้างเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2350 เสร็จสมบูรณ์ พ.ศ. 2390 ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 3 และได้รับพระราชทานนามใหม่ว่า “วัดสุทัศเทพวราราม” ที่พระวิหารมี “พระศรีศากยมุนี” เป็นพระประธานซึ่งอัญเชิญมาจากสุโขทัยเป็นพระพุทธรูปปางมารวิชัยหล่อด้วยสำริดถอดแบบมาจากพระวิหารพระมงคลบพิตร กรุงศรีอยุธยาบานประตูใหญ่ของพระวิหารสลักไม้สวยงามรอบพระวิหารมีถะ หรือเจดีย์ศิลาแบบจีนตั้งอยู่บนฐานทักษิณ เป็นถะ 6 ชั้น จำนวน 28 องค์ มีพระอุโบสถเป็นที่ประดิษฐานพระพุทธตรีโลกเชฏฐ์ เป็นพระประธานปางมารวิชัย ใหญ่กว่าพระที่หล่อในสมัยกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ องค์อื่นๆ มีภาพจิตรกรรมฝาผนังอันเป็นฝีมือช่างชั้นครูในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 3 ที่งดงามมาก พระอุโบสถนี้นับว่ายาวที่สุดในประเทศไทย นอกจากนี้ยังมีศาลาการเปรียญที่มีพระพุทธเสรฏฐมุนี เป็นพระประธานที่หล่อด้วยกลักฝิ่นเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2382 ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 3 เช่นกัน
