เป็นประเพณีที่เก่าแก่สืบกันมาแต่โบราณของชาว อำเภอบางพลี ในสมัยก่อนนั้นในแถบอำเภอบางพลีมีประชาชนอาศัยอยู่แบ่งเป็น 3 พวก คือ คนไทย คนรามัญ และคนลาว แต่ละพวกช่วยกัน ทำมาหากินโดยแยกย้ายกันไปคนละทางเพื่อจะได้รู้ถึงภูมิประเทศว่าด้านไหนหากิน คล่องกว่ากัน คนลาวไปทางคลองสลุด คนไทยไปทางคลองชวดลาดข้าว และคนรามัญไปทางคลองลาดกระบัง พวกคนรามัญที่ไปทางคลองลาดกระบังทำอยู่ 2-3 ปี ก็ไม่ได้ผลเพราะนกและหนูชุกชุมรบกวนพืชผลต่างๆ จึงเตรียมตัวอพยพกลับถิ่นฐานเดิม โดยอพยพในตอนเช้ามืดของเดือน 11 ขึ้น 14 ค่ำ ก่อนไปก็ได้เก็บดอกบัวในบึงบริเวณนั้นเพื่อนำไปกราบมนัสการหลวงพ่อโต พร้อมทั้งขอน้ำมนต์เพื่อเป็นสิริมงคล และสั่งเสียคนไทยที่สนิทกันว่า ในปีต่อๆ ไปเมื่อถึงเดือน 11 ขึ้น 14 ค่ำ ให้ช่วยกันเก็บดอกบัวรวบรวมไว้ให้ที่วัดหลวงพ่อโต แล้วพวกตนจะมารับเอาดอกบัวไป
