การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาศักยภาพการจัดการแหล่งท่องเที่ยวเชิงประวัติศาสตร์ ของศูนย์เรียนรู้และท่องเที่ยวเชิงประวัติศาสตร์ ค่าย 514 เพื่อศึกษาปัจจัยที่นำไปสู่แนวทางการพัฒนาศักยภาพการจัดการแหล่งท่องเที่ยวเชิงประวัติศาสตร์ ของศูนย์เรียนรู้และท่องเที่ยวเชิงประวัติศาสตร์ ค่าย 514 และเพื่อการถอดบทเรียนศักยภาพการจัดการแหล่งท่องเที่ยวเชิงประวัติศาสตร์ ให้เป็นแนวทางในการจัดการแหล่งท่องเที่ยวอื่นๆ ต่อไป โดยประชากรที่ใช้ในการวิจัยคือ ประชากรในพื้นที่บริเวณใกล้เคียง รวมถึงนักท่องเที่ยวที่เดินทางมาเยือนศูนย์เรียนรู้และท่องเที่ยวเชิงอนุรักษ์ประวัติศาสตร์ ค่าย 514 อำเภอเคียนซา จังหวัดสุราษฎร์ธานี กลุ่มตัวอย่างที่ใช้เนื่องจากไม่สามารถหาจำนวนของนักท่องเที่ยวที่เดินทางเข้าไปเยือนศูนย์เรียนรู้และท่องเที่ยวเชิงประวัติศาสตร์ ค่าย 514 ได้ ดังนั้นจึงกำหนดกลุ่มตัวอย่างจากการคำนวณสูตร (บุญธรรม กิจปรีดาบริสุทธิ์, 2549 : 89) จำนวน 385 คน ซึ่งเครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลเป็นแบบประมาณค่า 5 ระดับ
