กิเลส เป็นสภาพธรรมที่เป็นเครื่องเศร้าหมองของจิต เมื่อกิเลสเกิดขึ้นย่อมทำให้

จิตเศร้าหมอง กิเลสเป็นสภาพธรรมที่มีจริง เป็นเจตสิก กิเลส มี ๑๐ ประการ คือ

๑.ทิฏฐิกิเลส อันได้แก่ ทิฏฐิเจตสิก คือ ความเห็นผิด ที่เป็นเครื่องเศร้าหมองจิต

๒.วิจิกิจฉากิเลส อันได้แก่ ความสงสัย ที่เป็นเครื่องเศร้าหมองจิต

๓.โทสะกิเลส อันได้แก่ ความโกรธความขุ่นมัวใจ ที่เป็นเครื่องเศร้าหมองจิต

๔.โลภะกิเลส อันได้แก่ ความติดข้อง ต้องการ ที่ทำให้ใจเศร้าหมอง

๕.โมหะกิเลส อันได้แก่ ความหลงลืมไม่รู้ความจริง เป็นเครื่องเศร้าหมองจิต

๖.ถีนะกิเลส อันได้แก่ ความหดหู่ ท้อถอย ซึมเซา เป็นเครื่องเศร้าหมองจิต

๗.อุทธัจจะกิเลส อันได้แก่ ความฟุ้งซ่านรำคาญใจ เป็นเครื่องเศร้าหมองจิต

๘.อหิริกะกิเลส อันได้แก่ ความไม่ละอายต่อบาป เป็นเครื่องเศร้าหมองจิต

๙.มานะกิเลส อันได้แก่ ความสำคัญตน การเปรียบเทียบ ทำให้ใจเศร้าหมอง

๑๐.อโนตตัปปะกิเลส อันได้แก่ ความไม่เกรงกลัวต่อบาป ทำให้ใจเศร้าหมอง
