1) การพิทักษ์สิทธิ หรือการทำหน้าที่แทน (Advocacy)
Advocacy หมายถึงการที่บุคคลกระทำเพื่อปกป้องผู้อื่น หรือช่วยให้ผู้อื่นได้รับประโยชน์ ดังนั้นในการทำหน้าที่แทนผู้ป่วย พยาบาลจะต้องช่วยผู้ป่วย พิทักษ์สิทธิของผู้ป่วย และเป็นตัวแทนของผู้ป่วย (surrogates) ในการตัดสินใจ และลงมือกระทำเพื่อประโยชน์สูงสุดของผู้ป่วย (Rushton,1994)
