พระธาตุดอยสุเทพตั้งอยู่บนดอยสุเทพ จังหวัดเชียงใหม่
การขึ้นไปนมัสการในปัจจุบันนี้สะดวกสบายมาก เพราะมีถนนซึ่งสร้างสำเร็จโดย " ครูบาศรีวิชัย " พระคุณเจ้าได้เชิญชวนชาวบ้านในภาคเหนือทั้งหลาย ให้ร่วมแรงร่วมใจกันก่อสร้างถนนเวียนไปจนถึงยอดพระธาตุแห่งนี้
ตำนานการสร้างพระธาตุดอยสุเทพกล่าวเอาไว้ว่า กล่าวถึงพระมหาสุมนเถรเจ้าแห่งสุโขทัยเกิดนิมิตฝันอันประหลาดว่า พระบรมธาตุของพระพุทธเจ้า ซึ่งพระเจ้าธรรมาอโศกราชให้อัญเชิญมาบรรจุไว้ ณ พระเจดีย์เมืองปางจานั้น บัดนี้พระเจดีย์นั้นหักพังเสียแล้ว โดยข้างเจดีย์มีกอดอกเข็มกอหนึ่ง มีลักษณะเป็นรูปม้านั่ง เป็นที่สถิตของพระบรมธาตุ ขอให้ท่านไปขุดเอาพระบรมธาตุองค์นี้มาเสีย
รุ่งขึ้น พระสุมนเถรก็นำความไปถวายพระพรแก่พระธรรมราชา เจ้าเมืองสุโขทัย ณ เมืองศรีสัชนาลัย แล้วถวายพระพรเรื่องความฝันนั้นแก่พระเจ้าลือไทยให้ทรงทราบทุกประการ พระองค์ทรงโสมนัสยิ่งนัก ตรัสสั่งอนุญาตและพระราชทานคนช่วยขุดพระบรมธาตุ พระสุมนเถรเจ้าก็พาคนไปยังเมืองปางจา แล้วสร้างศาลเพียงตากระทำการสักการะบูชาด้วยดอกไม้ธูปเทียนต่างๆ ตกกลางคืน พระเถรเจ้าได้กระทำการบวงสรวงเทพเจ้าให้ขุดพระธาตุได้สมตามปรารถนา พอสิ้นคำอธิษฐาน พระบรมธาตุก็ทำปาฏิหารย์รุ่งโรจน์เป็นแสงรัศมีสุกใสสวยงามยิ่งนัก พระเถรเจ้าจึงได้เอาธงปักเป็นเครื่องหมายข้างกอดอกเข็มไว้
ต่อมา พระสุมนเถรเจ้าจึงให้ผู้จะขุดพระบรมธาตุนั้นทุกคนสมาทานศีล ๕ และศีล ๘ ทุกคนแล้วจึงลงมือขุดก็พบอิฐและศิลา และในไม่ช้าผอบที่บรรจุพระบรมธาตุเป็นชั้นๆ คือ
• ชั้นแรก เป็นผอบทองเหลือง
• ชั้นที่สอง เป็นผอบเงิน
• ชั้นที่สาม เป็นผอบทองคำ
• ชั้นที่สี่ เป็นที่บรรจุพระบรมธาตุ เป็นผอบแก้วประพาฬ ขนาดโตเท่าลูกทับทิม
เมื่อเหตุการณ์ประสบเช่นนี้แล้ว จึงมีผู้สงสัยว่าจะใช่พระบรมธาตุจริงหรือ พระสุมนเถรเจ้าจึงว่าไม่ใช่พระบรมธาตุ เป็นผอบแก้ว และทำการสักการะบูชาและตั้งสัตยาธิษฐาน จึงได้เห็นที่เปิดพระเถรเจ้าจึงเปิดผอบก็เห็นพระบรมธาตุโตประมาณเท่าเม็ดถั่วเขียว มีพระรัศมีมีทองสุกปลั่ง คนทั้งหลายได้เห็นดังนั้น จึงพากันอนุโมทนา และสรงน้ำชำระพระบรมธาตุด้วยความเลื่อมใสยิ่งเมื่อเรียบร้อยแล้วจึงนำกลับมายังเมืองศรีสัชนาลัย
เมื่อพระเจ้าลือไทยทรงทราบข่าวนั้น จึงโปรดให้สร้างปราสาทขึ้นหลังหนึ่งเพื่อประดิษฐานพระบรมธาตุที่ได้มานี้ เพราะทรงเลื่อมใสและได้ทอดพระเนตรเห็นพระบรมธาตุแสดงปาฏิหารย์อย่างน่าอัศจรรย์มาแล้ว พระองค์ส่งข่าวไปถวายพระธรรมราชาเจ้าเมืองสุโขทัย พระเจ้าธรรมราชาก็ทรงยินดียิ่ง ทรงดำริว่าถ้าพระธาตุองค์นี้แสดงปาฏิหารย์ดังที่คนเล่าลือแล้วไซร้ เราจักสร้างเจดีย์ทองคำองค์หนึ่งในเมืองนี้เพื่อประดิษฐานไว้เป็นที่สักการะบูชาให้จงได้ แต่พระบรมธาตุมิได้แสดงปาฏิหารย์ดังที่ได้ยิน จึงมิทรงเชื่อถือถึงกับรับสั่งคืนพระบรมะตุให้แก่พระสุมนเถรเจ้าตามเดิม
ในสมัยพระเจ้ากือนาแห่งราชวงศ์มังรายที่ ๖ ขึ้นครองนครเชียงใหม่ จุลศักราช ๗๒๙ พ.ศ. ๑๙๑๐ พระองค์มีความเลื่อมใสในพระพุทธศาสนา จึงให้ไปนิมนต์พระสุมนเถรเจ้า มาประกาศศาสนาที่เมืองเชียงใหม่ตามลัทธิลังกา ทางสุโขทัยก็ยินยอมให้พระสุมนเถรเจ้ามาพร้อมกับพระธาตุนั้นมาด้วย ภายหลังพระเจ้ากือนาได้อัญเชิญไปบรรจุไว้ ณ วัดบุปผารามสวนดอกไม้หลวง พ.ศ. ๑๙๒๖
ส่วนอีกองค์หนึ่ง พระองค์อธิษฐานเสี่ยงไป โดยอัญเชิญพระบรมธาตุสถิตบนหลังช้างเผือก ช้างเผือกก็แผดร้องถึง ๓ ครั้ง แล้วบ่ายหน้าไปทางทิศเหนือ เดินมาพักใหญ่ถึงภูเขาลูกหนึ่งแล้วหยุดบนภูเขาลูกหนึ่งแล้วจึงเดินต่อไปอีก ภูเขาที่ช้างเผือกหยุดนั้น ปัจจุบันเรียกว่า " ดอยช้างนอน " จนกระทั่งพักใหญ่ช้างเผือกจึงหยุดบริเวณที่กว้างและราบเรียบ แล้วจึงเดินต่อไปอีก ปัจจุบันเรียกที่ราบนั้นว่า " ยอดดอยงาม " ช้างเผือกเดินต่อไปเรื่อยๆ จนกระทั่งลุถึงดอยสุเทพ จึงหยุดนิ่ง พร้อมกับแผดร้องขึ้นถึง ๓ ครั้ง
กระทำปทักษิณสถานที่นี้ถึง ๓ ครั้ง แล้วคุกเข่าทั้ง ๔ ลง พระเจ้ากือนาทรงโสมนัสยิ่งนักรีบอาราธนาพระบรมธาตุลงจากหลังช้างเผือก พอช้างเผือกลงจากหลังช้างเท่านั้น ช้างเผือกก็ถึงความตายทันที พระเจ้ากือนาได้ทอดพระเนตรเห็นเหตุการณ์มหัศจรรย์ในครั้งนี้ ก็ทรงนมัสการกราบไหว้พระธาตุด้วยความเคารพยำเกรงยิ่ง แล้วจึงรับสั่งให้ขุดสถานที่บนยอดดอยนั้นลึก ๘ ศอก ๑ วา ๓ ศอก แล้วให้เอาแท่งหินใหญ่ ๖ ศอก มากระทำเป็นหีบหินใหญ่ ใส่ลงไปในหลุมนั้น แล้วอาราธนาพระธาตุ พร้อมทั้งผอบตั้งไว้ในหีบหิน เมื่อเสร็จเรียบร้อยแล้วจึงโปรดให้สร้างเจดีย์สวมลงสถานที่ฝังพระบรมธาตุนั้นอีกองค์หนึ่งสูง ๕ วา
พระธาตุดอยสุเทพนั้น มีเจ้านายเมืองเชียงใหม่ทุกๆพระองค์เคารพนับถือมาก และบูรณะปฏิสังขรณ์กันมาตลอด จนมาถึงท้าวอ้ายจึงให้สร้างเพิ่มเติมองค์พระเจดีย์ให้สูงขึ้นเป็น ๑๑ วา ต่อมาท้าวชายได้สร้างเพิ่มเติม และสร้างวิหารหน้าหลังและระเบียงรอบพระมหาธาตุ สำเร็จเรียบร้อยบริบูรณ์มาจนถึงปัจจุบันนี้
